I never understood it either but maybe I'm just too young. A racial slur doesn't even pop in my head when someone pisses me off. It's lazy. Whenever I hear one thrown my way (99% of the time it happens over the phone) I laugh and calmly piss them off without insulting them.

Even a great point can and likely will become a dreadful bore to listen to when it is seemingly a constant subject brought up.

Dan Bernstein, or his female counterpart Nancy Grace, are terrificly talented at bringing up a great cause or idea and presenting it in an abrasive, annoying fashion to the point (and sometimes beyond) that more than a few otherwise perfectly reasonable people reflexively say "fuck them, fuck that, fuck everything", at which point, essentially, just as great a social disservice is being done by the commentator as was done by the perpetrator.

I might add that nobody dies, gets cancer, or even loses wifi reception just because someone somewhere says 'redskin', or 'n!gger', or 'cracker' for that matter, so there does come the odd occasion now and then when it needs to be slightly repositioned on the OMG!!! spectrum if for no other reason than to help assure that regular folks who don't in any way find it favorable behavior don't start tuning it out.

It doesn't make it any less wrong because there are other things going on in the world. It still sucks. Sure it's a silly little sport team name. But it's ridiculous that something like that is still used. Is it worth starting a war over? Of course not. But the "I don;t give a shit" attitude is just curious (hair) to me. Seems like something that insignificant could have been handled in such a way as to not offend a group of people that have been all but murdered off...

First of all, "everyone" isn't an accurate statement; not remotely so.

Second, I replied as to why "everyone" seems to not have a fervent interest; I didn't say it made it any less right or wrong.

Third, last time I checked, it was in fact a person's right not to give a damn about something if they chose to.

Dovetailing off point three though, 25 years ago (let alone 50) anyone who said they didn't like the Redskins name would've been told where to get off, laughed out of the room, and if they kept at it, probably ostracized. Nowadays, the debate continues because "everyone" is more in tune with not using racial slurs so comfrotably ... it's hard to find an otherwise reasonable person that is pro "redskin" or pro "n!gger".

So I don't quite get why you're starting to slip into Bernstein-like hyperbole to make a point that nobody here is really arguing the other side of, particularly when I mentioned the potential for well-reasoned people to tune it out when they read that kind of overwrought crap too often.
