Cubs followed up with an equally no name guy. Both may be saving up to try to throw some cash at one of the HS arms rated in the top 100, tomorrow.

As long as we have to wait for a Sox fan to say, "Rondon-Stud-World Series"

Cub fans are really freaking out over TheoandJed selecting quantity over quality. I thought the whole point was losing to get the high pick.

It's kind of like the Bible. The plan means one thing until it means something else. Don't take it literally unless you are supposed to take it literally.

Yeah, and I don't want to hear Spiegel and Rozner talking about how important tanking is anymore. The Cubs could have probably won a Wild Card and still been able to draft this guy.

Very true Joe as far as looking at one pick but the difference between the wild card and finishing with the 4th pick is $1,378,800. That goes along way to signing better better prospects later in the draft.

In this draft there were three "elite" guys and they went 1-2-3. What do you do at pick 4?

What the Cubs did is very similar to going to Vegas and counting cards. What you are really trying to do is beat the odds 66% of first round picks make it. 49% in round 2 and 32% in rounds 3-5. If you can beat those percentages over time you will succeed. This is only the third draft under the NEW CBA and the "Jerry" rules have changed the game. By drafting the best college power bat and most likely signing him for under slot you can bank that money for later in the draft. Power is getting harder and harder to find at the major league level and the Cubs have followed the "bats over arms" and College over High school" theory rather well. By taking a college senior with the second pick they also counted a few more cards and banked some more cash for later in the draft. The young high school pitchers took later have a lot of upside and will all require 3-5 years to get to the Show.

The first three Sox picks are GREAT after that meh
The first three Cubs picks are GOOD after that they have a much higher upside overall and I think they can beat the odds.

Both teams had a plan in this crap shoot and both executed rather well... I like both drafts overall. I can go on and on Joe but you don't care about prospects or the minor leagues so just sit back and enjoy the dog pile fight (coin flip) for October. I know I will be loving it and the next 4 months will sort it all out. Your Sox are contenders in this wild 2014 coin flip where parity has peaked. It's gonna be fun.

"Make it" while providing a very definite standard, really doesn't define successful drafting. A better standard would be meaningful presence in the majors but that is obviously far to subjective for quantification.

Give me great out of the first three picks and meh out of the rest every year because I don't really care if my GM is drafting future utility players, 4th outfielders and mop up long relievers. Those are available on the market every year just as cheaply (and probably less cheaply considering the development costs) as if they were drafted.

good god how hard is it to get the guys name right

Quote:
By Bruce Levine-
CHICAGO (CBS) – The Chicago White Sox have a battle on their hands to sign their No. 1 pick before the July 18 deadline.
Normally five weeks is a sufficient period of time to sign any top-tier draft choice. In the case of Carlos Rodon, the Scott Boras factor could loom large. Rodan, the No. 3 pick overall in last week’s amateur draft, has two choices.
First and foremost, he can receive around $5 million in slot money to sign with Chicago. His second choice is to return to North Carolina State and pitch one more season. If he stays healthy and has a great season, he could get a million or two more as the No. 1 pick in the 2015 draft.
The downside to all of this is that the White Sox would miss out on a near-ready major league pitcher, and Rodon could blow a fortune if he craps out.
“Everything you said makes a lot of sense,” White Sox general manager Rick Hahn said when presented those very real situations. “As to how my conversations have gone or continue to go, it is nothing we are going to say publicly.”
Hahn and Co. will be battling the Godzilla of all agents in Boras. The super-agent not only wants top dollar for his players, he wants to make a splash for marketing purposes. Every contract his clients sign is orchestrated to get the most attention for him and his company. Truth be told, Boras is a brilliant tactician and has a photographic memory. That helps him defend the unique stat pack and razzle-dazzle that his PR staff publishes.
The Chris Sale comparison should be a great negotiation tool for Hahn. He can point to the White Sox’s ace getting to the big leagues just a few months after getting drafted in 2010.
“We were the ones, and Chris certainly did well with that, but that was a special situation,” Hahn said. “That was really a special situation and you don’t see that too often — a player makes his debut the same year he was drafted, let alone having an immediate impact and not going back to the minor leagues.”
All the talk on both sides won’t change the fact that Rodon is the most finished pitching prospect to get drafted.
“If there is one player in this draft who has the potential to (make it to the majors quickly), it would probably be Carlos Rodon,” Hahn said.

The new slot will kill Boras in the end. Let him go back and blow out his arm if he listens to that jack ass. Fuck Boras.

I don't worry about signing Rodon at all. In fact I hardly ever think about it. I mean, I'm not even really thinking about it right now. While all the other guys are out playing and risking injury, Rodon is resting. Can't get hurt that way. It's a good thing. Really.

 Fucking Sox fans  Why play him at all in the minors. Just rest him for a year or two and Hahn can call him up and say, "Hey Rodon, what you been doing the past couple years brah? Ready to join the majors? We take care of our own brah. Love yah, see you on the south side.

Rodon :?

That may end up being a pretty sound strategy.

The Sox have signed 28 draft picks including 9 of their first 10 picks.

Yep. Bryant has clearly shown he can hit. Best hitter since Ted Williams. Just bench him now so he is fresh for the 2021 NL Wilcard play in game.

Well that certainly helps their negotations with Rondon... meaning there isn't a negotiation. Take it or leave it. They must be certain he's willing to sign.

I'm not sure if it helps but it is an interesting strategy. Take all the money away so there's nothing to negotiate. I still think he'll sign but they're playing with fire.

What about that this high school pitcher in the 14th round? I read it would be a real coup if they could sign him.

Bryce Montes de Oca. 6'8" 265. Had TJ as a junior and only made a couple starts before the draft. I think he's a fall back option in case they don't sign Rodon. He's committed to Missouri.

The White Sox have about $6,107,100 left to sign Rodon without penalty. You can be sure Boras will do everything he can to squeeze Jerry (who was a BIG supporter of the new CBA which cut the $$$ being spent). They can go up to as much as 5% over the alloted cap and the Sox would them only pay an additional penalty to MLB.

Keith Law at ESPN has reranked the Sox and now has Rodon as #1.

Love being able to search "IMU" and see all the posts addressing me somehow. Bigfan came through for sure.

Anyways, Rodon was the #1 on my draft board. Was really hoping, against all rational thought, that Rodon would somehow be there at #4.

Great pick.

Baseball America reports that the White Sox have $6,582,585 left to sign Rodon this includes the 5 % allowed to go over budget and NOT lose a 2015 draft pick.

The Sox and Seattle booth used the strategy of signing their 2-10 draft choices first and then leaving Agent Scott Boras with little wiggle room.
