Oh wait...

I'm already on record as saying Rizzo should bat second.

The Cubs are missing good 3 and 4 hitters.

Bryant and Baez just happen to look like they could be good 3 and 4 hitters.

Convenient, yes?

Oh wait.

Changing the direction of the argument is usually a sign that you lost said argument. I see this went from "Abreu vs Rizzo" to "Abreu isn't an ideal 3 hitter". That's fine. At least we know the first debate is over.

Unless I'm misunderstanding things, it is also saying "He's too good to be a 3 hitter. He should be a 4 hitter." In that case, guilty as charged. It sucks that Abreu is too good at hitting.

Agree, agree. I'm fine with Abroo hitting where he is. He gets back in the lineup and Flowers goes yard last night. He helps everybody.

No, the best hitter hits third usually.

Abreu is better than Rizzo right now

Nothing Rizzo has done in his career has shown me he will ever be as good as Abreu is now, small sample size notwithstanding.

This is the kind of thing that gets ridiculed by SABRmetric wannabe guys, but I'll say it anyway. Abreu is affecting the entire approach that pitchers have to the White Sox lineup. Everything is done with him in mind, where he's at in the order and when he's coming up. That isn't the case for Rizzo. I'm not saying that it never will be, it just isn't right now. And what I'm talking about goes beyond the numbers. There are plenty of offensive numbers one could use to make a case that SDwight Evans was better than Jim Rice, but if you ever watched their teams and you know anything about the game, you understand that those numbers are lying. Nobody- no pitcher, no manager, no pitching coach- nobody, ever went through the Red Sox lineup and said, "Uh oh, Dewey is up."

Abreu might be better than that though.

I brought the batting order thing up weeks ago.

Abreu is much, much better than Rizzo YTD.

I'm not conceding the argument over their respective careers....or hell, even for the entirety of this season.

'Let's not even compare these two' difference (aka the Jackson-Trout difference): .151 and up OPS

Abreu; 17HR, 47RBI, 31R, .265avg, .315OBP, .934 OPS (46 games)
Rizzo; 10HR, 28RBI, 33R, .267avg, .398 OBP, .755 OPS (53 games)

Abreu is plus .179 in OPS, so now its not even "far superior" its 'Let's not even compare these two' difference.

Steve Stone appears to be 100% on the money so far, bigfan.

So I just realized the .755 OPS was a lie. Where did you get that number Frank? He never had a .755 OPS.

http://www.baseball-reference.com/playe ... &year=2014

And he has a .880 OPS today, compared to Abreu's .938.

YES the longest this year at The Cell
Abreu, Jose 05/09/14 443'
second longest
Bogaerts, Xander 04/17/14 437'

But those are nothing compared to Wrigley
Weeks, Rickie 05/18/14 464'
Lake, Junior 04/09/14 451'
Alvarez, Pedro 04/10/14 446'

and those do not come close to the TOP 5 in MLB up through today
Stanton, Giancarlo MIA 04/04/14 484'
Ortiz, David BOS 04/22/14 482'
Upton, Justin ATL 04/10/14 477'
Ramirez, Hanley LAD 06/08/14 472'
Goldschmidt, Paul ARI 05/28/14 470'

Far superior.

You all loved OPS until today. Wha happen?!

Again, the Cubs don't have a power bat like Abreu. If they did, he would be hitting in the four spot.

Code:
Cleanup

The old-school book says to put your big power bat here, probably a guy with a low batting average, who will hit the big multi-run homeruns.

The Book says the #4 hitter comes to bat in the most important situations out of all nine spots, but is equal in importance to the #2 hole once you consider the #2 guy receives more plate appearances. The cleanup hitter is the best hitter on the team with power.

Rizzo is actually where he should be in the line-up, doing exactly what he should be doing. Castro is the one who is sort of miscast, yet he is doing a hell of a job where he is as well.

edit: I don't even want to use that code section...it does a bad job of summarizing any batting order position besides lead-off and cleanup. And it assumes your team is full of offensive stars. I guess, in summary, you can't go wrong with Rizzo or Abreu anywhere in the lineup.

Rizzo is tied 11th overall in MLB for HRs. That's a decent power bat.
