RFDC, does the horse have to win the Derby and Preakness?

If not, then my choice would be Wise Dan. I believe he's 7 now, so I wouldn't imagine him racing too much longer. He had to get emergency colic surgery last month, but his trainer said he came out of it Ok and may be racing by end of the summer....I'm holding out hope for the Arlington Million.

The obvious answer is Man o' War. He may be the greatest horse that ever lived.

If we're going more recently it's undoubtedly Spectacular Bid. You can make a strong case that the Bid was better than Secretariat. This might be the most impressive race any horse has ever run:

What's the distance and the surface? I've definitely got Secretariat at a buck and a half on grass. I'm taking Bid on dirt at a mile and a quarter. Man o' War is way outside my time zone. It's tougher for me to place him.

To some degree it's a generational thing. My grandfather would argue Man o' War was the best, my dad would say Citation, and I've gotta go Secretariat. I don't think there's any right answer. It would be a hell of a race.

What about Zenyatta? 2010 was the year I really got into this sport. I was at Mr. D's in Arlington Park for the Preakness that year. They showed the last race on the big screen inside the track. I went out to watch, and it was only me and some other dude standing out there. What a race. She almost won.

I don't remember if she even ran the Triple Crown races or what. For the more seasoned horse players, please share your thoughts on Zenyatta. I'll hang up and listen for your answer.

Zenyatta was a hell of a horse. A filly that whips colts is quite a thing. But I could never really rate even the greatest mare with the best colts.

When we talk about the greatest horses of the American turf, I think a resume that includes the Triple Crown races is probably a prerequisite. Of course there are many great horses that took different paths or had different specialties, or even that were also rans in their own Triple Crowns and went on to greatness later. John Henry, Kelso, Forego all come immediately to mind, great geldings that won at the top classes forever. Dr. Fager who was unbeatable at a mile. And you've got Cigar. It took Bill Mott a long time to figure out he wasn't a turf horse. Then there's something like Native Dancer who lost only one race- the Kentucky Derby. I would think he'd have to be in any conversation of the greatest horses of the 20th century.

How about Cigar??? 16 consecutive wins ought to count for something.

Edit: I see JORR brought him up.

You know, that is kind of interesting that in horses, the gap is a lot smaller in athletic performance than humans. I don't know enough about dog racing to see if it applies there too, but that would be interesting to see if the smaller the animal, the bigger the gap in gender performance.

It might just be the species. Some species actually have more athletic and dominant females. Hyenas and meerkats, for example.

I have no idea what the fuck JORR is talking about but I could read his horse racing thoughts all day. Way to make a boring subject interesting JORR!
