The Sting...not the Stong.

Nice win for El Tri...and another win for me!

I was surprised how popular the World Cup is in Montreal. Every bar has it and they're pretty packed. I'm trying real hard to buy in but it's just not clicking.

My friends and I always referred to them as "Der Shting". Arno Steffenhagen, Karl-Heinz Granitza and Willie Roy!

Lots of immigrants in Montreal, especially from Italy and the Arab world. Soccer has taken the place of baseball as their other sport.

No. Montreal is very much Canadian. French-Canadian is Canadian, too. The language laws and separatism aren't about preserving a link with France but preserving a culture that they feel is altogether their own. They do share some cultural values with France (the stuff about no religious wear and no changing names after marriage is classic French republicanism) but Quebec is really its own little world. They produce most of their own television.

I was told by a local that there while they are Canadian, there is a very strong tie to the French culture and lifestyle. Not snobby, but similiar...

The French see the Quebecois as a bunch of backward farmers and fur trappers for whom they have to subtitle their own films so it can understood by the goobers speaking a 16th century dialect.

My wife is a fluent French speaker. She wouldn't call what they speak in Canada "French". She calls it Quebecois. She draws a parallel between it and French and what they speak on Swamp People and English.

Franz Matthieu, Rudy Glenn...yes at one time your old buddy good dolphin could have turned into a soccer fan. My oldest brother was a big soccer player so my early life followed his sports interests.

I went to games at Comiskey along with a bunch of cake eater soccer guys. I went to indoor games.

I have never played the game in my life. I thank my dad not allowing that cycle to continue in his family

This has been the highest scoring World Cup so far.

So it is normally even MORE boring?

Honestly if you want to sell someone on hockey, have them watch ANY soccer match for like ten minutes before you show them hockey (or any other sport)

It seems MORE boring than ever

There are probably more flops this year. That is exciting, right?

I saw that they have something new in soccer:

Instead of using a little toy stretcher to carry them off the field when they are "hurt", they now use something that looks like a big red bucket. Awesome.
