Yeah go ahead and pretend you're cool by listening to a Captain Beefheart album from start to finish. :D

I've never denied being a pretentious dick. I don't even really enjoy it (excepting "Moonlight on Vermont," obv), but it's the kind of album you have to listen to all at once or not at all.

Wrong. The correct answer is Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots. That or any Ween album obviously.

Yoshimi's a good call.

I'd also add White Light/White Heat, Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs, and Blood on the Tracks.

White Light/White Heat is an excellent call. The Name of This Band is Talking Heads is also choice, which I suppose isn't really an original album but who cares.

Marquee Moon by Television may be one of the finest albums ever made. I hate it. Give me The Soft Parade by The Doors. Critics hated it. I love it. All subjective is it not?

for me it'd be "The Mollusk" because it's one of the most thematically sound albums I've ever heard. But some Ween albums are just a collection of songs, like "Pure Guava" and I can listen to them in any order and it makes no difference to me. "White Pepper" I definitely listen to from start to finish.

anytime i listen to neutral milk hotel's "in the aeroplane over the sea" i always have to listen to the entire album.

+1 I don't even have an iTunes account. I still buy the actual cd

That works with U2 albums but doesn't account for anyone who ever put a great song at the end.

Agreed

Nice. I played that all the way through last time I moved. (found it in a wrong cd case, thought I had lost it)

I was thinking more of the Indian Summer Sky/Elvis/MLK ambient noodling that closes it out, which, though it isn't bad (and nor is "Bad"), can't compare to the first half of the album.

MLK, Love is Blindness, and 40 are defensive specialist SS's

I go out of my way to listen to albums in order even in the free music age. Actually that's a good barometer for how much I care. There are artists where Ill download a few songs. But if I like it then its time go get the whole album in order and see what we have

The Doors are interesting. I loved them in high school, then decided in my 20s that the majority of their catalog is overwrought garbage, and now I've come back around to thinking they're really good. Tough for me to choose one album, though--Morrison Hotel, maybe?
