I'd turn them back in.

Id probably would of noticed the bill was 75 dollars off at the register and asked them to charge me.

That's true. If they spent less than 500 dollars, Id say you'd have to notice

My first thought would be to go back and pay for them. But then I would think about all the corporate welfare the company gets and just wear them for free as I already paid in a sense.

True, but what kind of petty asswipe takes back 2 dollars? Does he not want to appear like some decadent Roman emperor by not just leaving it at around? If he really needs that 2 bucks, what the hell is he doing spending forty on a pizza? Be a pal and hope that that karma gives you a slight nod in the future or something like that ... the guy made the mistake in haste, RPB was a man and wanted to make sure the guy was informed, and as a token of thanks for the extra effort he took back a couple bucks. I hope they put so much cheese on his pizza that the guy doesn't shit this week, frankly.

Yeah, and that was ONE pizza btw. Extra jalepeno's I think. But yeah, he has money for a 35 dollar pizza
All true. But he was planning to tip $3 at first, ended up tipping ~$8. Based on it being a one pie delivery, $8 is easily in the top 10% of best tips you would get for the week. (or at least it was back when I delivered)

Once my dad found a wallet with like $140 bucks in it. I forget the exact amount. It was lying on the street downtown. So he took it to the post office, and shipped it to the guy's address on his DL and used some of the cash in the wallet for shipping. Put in a note with his name and number in case there was any questions.
The guy called a couple days later pissed that he used his money to ship the wallet. Said my dad owed him $5 or whatever it cost to ship.

Everybody's decision making process and moral perspectives are different. I don't think one needs to be Psycory to understand that. Sometimes you can at least get some grasp on why someone would do something you think you wouldn't likely, or ever, do ... sometimes, you're just left shaking your head as to how someone can do something so awful - or so (seemingly) selfless.

I really do think I'd take them back, or at the very least make them aware of it so that somebody didn't get fired or penalized in some fashion for an honest mistake. Is it possible I might compartmentalize and rationalize in a given moment to not do "the right thing"? Sure it's possible, I just hope not probable.

When I was in college working at the golf course during the summer, I found a 100 dollar bill on the floor one day in the pro shop. I instantly told my boss about it, who put it in the safe place and said it would stay there for a while to give someone a chance to claim it.

Maybe a month or so later, no one had claimed it, so he told me it was mine. Of course I blew it on a bunch of stupid shit because, well, college kid with free money. Anyways, a few days later I get a phone call from someone asking if anyone had found a 100 dollar bill. My head instantly fills up with "fuck, shit, bitch" and then I say "No, sorry." A few seconds later I hear laughing on the other end of the phone as it was my uncle who had just heard the story from my mom and decided to have some fun.

Long story short. I'm a dishonest prick who will spend your money if you don't claim it in a timely manner.

JACK: No? Listen Morty you wanna settle up for last night? (Morty nods) All right. I owe you $19.45 (he gets his checks book and a pen from his pocket).

MORTY: What did you have? You had the minute steak?

JACK: Yeah.

MORTY: Did you have a coke or what?

JACK: I did NOT have a coke.

MORTY: Somebody had a coke.

HELEN: Oh I had a coke.

DORIS: And I had the scampi.

JACK: So that's $17.10 and the tax and the tip.

MORTY: All right. Make it 20 bucks.

JACK: It's: $19.45, Morty. (he gives him the check)

MORTY: $19.45 ?

Put the proverbial and, in this case, actual shoe on the other foot. Ask them what they would do if the clerk had overcharged them $75 for the same list of items they bought that day. The answer should then be obvious.

I'm keeping the shoes. Nobody is going to get fired.I mean, how fast do you think those shoes will be missed? No way they're tracing 1 pair of shoes back to that clerk and the failure to charge for them. Unless its a small mom and pop store in the sticks somewhere ,those shoes won't be missed for awhile. Agree with pittmike especially if its a large corporation like Dicks or Sports Authority.

I told this story here a few years ago.

About 15 years ago my Wife pulls out of the driveway and about halfway down the block she sees a purse in the middle of the street. She stops & picks it up to find the Womans ID so she can contact her. Inside the purse is a manilla envelope...& inside is $5K in cash. She contacts the Woman & brings her the purse and money. The $5K was Church money & the lady had set her purse on the roof of her car and drove away. She game my Wife a $100 reward but she told her that she didn't want any money.

I've told cashiers before that they gave me too much change back or that they missed the soda on the bottom of my grocery cart. The majority of the time they act like it is a chore or I am so I have taken the stance of 'fuck it'. I pay too much for shit as it is, a free pair of shoes makes up for the rest.

Okay, I've got one where I'm curious about the consensus.

About eight years ago I was running a business and I used one of my good friends for some services. I ran into a bunch of trouble with the business and it wrecked me financially for awhile. The company had to file bankruptcy and it owed my friend a bunch of money. I felt bad about that. Obviously, I didn't have the money to write him a check and I wasn't in a position to prefer creditors if I had. But I told him I would settle up with him personally. Anyway, it took me a little time to get back on my feet and I've nearly paid him all the money. It took about six years.

The problem is the way the two of us see the situation and it is really straining our friendship. He acts like I'm some kind of scumbag and is constantly throwing out little shots about how long it took me to pay him. He likes to refer to my "debt". He did it the other day in front of some common friends. The younger me might have thrown a punch at him, but I'm now capable of just writing it off to him being an asshole. And don't get me wrong. I don't expect the guy to be jumping for joy waiting six years for his dough. But if the situation were reversed I would be grateful that the guy made me whole no matter how long it took. I think he should be telling people what an honorable motherfucker I am and saying I'm a great guy and instead he's always insinuating that I'm a scumbag and a deadbeat.

What say you, CSFMB?

whenever money comes between friends it gets sticky. if the guy was willing to help you out, there should be a thought in the back of his mind that you're not in a position to pay him back immediately...it's not like you were going out buying expensive cars and going out to dinner all the time while you were paying him back i would imagine.

the guy shouldn't be rubbing it in but maybe in his mind he felt used. however, if you're prepared to give, you shouldn't expect to receive just because you gave something. in the end it becomes about expectation, and that just leads to resentment.

on another note...keep the shoes. and pay it forward.

Maybe I didn't make it clear enough. He wasn't doing me a favor. He has a business that provided services required by the business I was running. In fact, I've used his services for many other businesses and continue to do so to this day. I steer the business of my companies his way because we're friends. Not that he does anything less than a good job. I have no complaints about his work and more than that, I know I can trust him. With someone else, I'd have to watch them like a hawk.

You touched on something else there though. I'm sure he has had thoughts like, "look at this motherfucker, living it up when he owes me money." He and I just see things differently. I don't really owe him shit. The U.S. Bankruptcy Court- Northern District has affirmed that fact. I'm paying him the money because we're friends and I'm a good guy. I think he should be appreciative. He thinks I fucked him. I'm curious what other people think.

I was being semi serious with the image up there. I think it's obvious. If he can't recognize how another went out of his way to make things right, then I'm not sure what else can be done. I agree with w z about the friends and business thing, though that's not necessarily applicable to this story even though we are talking about two friends here. The point, I assume, is whether or not justice has been done, which must be answered prior to determining who is in the wrong here on an interpersonal level.

I think that your answer can be found in the bold letters.

I don't know your finanacial situation and I'm not commenting on that directly. Your friend seems to think that you were doing well enough to pay him based on your lifestyle. And there is where his problem lies.

I think it's noble of you to pay him. I would take him aside and explain that don't have to, and would appreciate it if he quit referring to you as deadbeat. If he persists, you can tell him that you have decided to become areal deadbeat about it.

whenever money comes between friends it gets sticky. if the guy was willing to help you out, there should be a thought in the back of his mind that you're not in a position to pay him back immediately...it's not like you were going out buying expensive cars and going out to dinner all the time while you were paying him back i would imagine.

the guy shouldn't be rubbing it in but maybe in his mind he felt used. however, if you're prepared to give, you shouldn't expect to receive just because you gave something. in the end it becomes about expectation, and that just leads to resentment.

I think this is heading into a more interesting conversation than my personal issues with a friend. It seems obvious from your statement above that you consider someone filing bankruptcy to be a "deadbeat", in spite of the fact that our founding fathers, in their infinite wisdom, provided provisions for doing so. Which is part of my problem with the way this guy views the world. He is very right-wing law and order except when it isn't convenient for him. He clearly understands bankruptcy laws to a basic degree. But those laws apparently don't count.

Also, and this is something I hadn't considered until another friend brought it up. Another company he did business with, a huge outfit that everyone here knows, flat out stiffed him a similar amount of money to what my company owed him. Just, "hey we're big, you're small, go fuck yourself." The guy who ran the account for the large company is another close friend of his. But he isn't angry with that guy. He doesn't go around suggesting he's a deadbeat. He doesn't have an expectation of that guy making him whole. I have to believe it's because of his politics and the assumption that the big guy is to be respected and the little guy to be shit on. If I were a different kind of person, a guy like him, I could be highly offended by that. But I've come to a point in my life where I realize I have no control over the crazy thoughts of other people.
