I'd view someone as a deadbeat if they owed me money and didn't pay it back whether it was a legally enforced debt or not. This board has had similar conversations before about how legality does not equal morality.

However, in your case, which you are paying him back, he should be thankful you are doing so and certainly not hold it over your head in public.

I'm not saying you should be pleased about it. I just find it interesting how we, as a society, consider a regular guy who is struggling and filed bankruptcy a deadbeat, but guys like Walt Disney and Donald Trump are respected American businessmen. Apparently, some "loopholes" are better than others.

Yeah, I can see that viewpoint. But we're not talking about a kid mowing a lawn here. Or a guy who did a brake job on my car. This is a guy running a successful business. Part of being in business is that sometimes other businesses go under and you're chasing your money and sometimes you get pennies on the dollar or nothing at all.

As I've pointed out, he doesn't expect his other friend who worked for HUGE COMPANY X to personally pay him. And that company just told him to fuck off. They have millions or maybe billions in the bank and paying him would be like you flipping a quarter to a bum. My company actually went under. It wasn't some personal attack against him. I don't think I see paying him the money as a favor necessarily, but it certainly isn't something I'm required to do. I think I should at least get maybe an "I appreciate the fact that you didn't leave me high and dry" or something like that. I wouldn't even object if it came with a little ballbusting like, "it took you long enough!" But I certainly don't think he should be resentful toward me about the way it's gone down.

If there was a chance the cashier might get blamed, I would return them. Otherwise, I probably wouldn't lose any sleep over it unless it was a small local business. I'm not too worried that the owner of Sporting Authority's children might have to scrimp on their Ferrari because I got free shoes.

Actually, I think he's really just an angry guy. He's had some recent business reversals himself. He can't do anything about those. But he can whip himself into a frenzy over me slow paying him 18 grand. I feel like I've become the focal point of his frustrations.

The exception is if its only among close friends. That I could see. To do it in front of others though, that's bullshit.

When I was riding my bike to work one morning I was going to stop at my banks outside ATM. As I was riding up the armored car that was filling it up pulled away. When I got to the ATM the guy had not only left the keys in but left ti open. I raced after and caught him telling him of the problem. He raced back fixed the situation and drove off without even a simple thanks you.

I had a service years ago.

They came four days a week. If he wasn't back in the truck in four minutes or less, I was getting a call from the office or the driver. They stop for no one other than customers. And even then they are on the clock.

I'm not trying to be a jag off. But the likelihood of that story be true is somewhere between Brick and Bmac having dinner together, and the Cubs winning a World Series.
