There are signs all over downtown. Rahm is trying to help Ricketts load Wrigley with signs. He allowed flashing signs along the highways. The old Sun-Times building was hideous with a huge yellow sign. People whined when the Santa Fe sign came down. So why the hue and cry over this one sign? It's obviously not about the sign at all, but rather what it says. If it said "PRITZKER" or "MAGGIE DALEY" people would be applauding it. Trump represents New York and his name brings out Second City complex whenever Chicagoans have to see it.

No. It is a beautiful building. Now it is marred by a hideous sign. Did Sears put up a big sign on their building? John Hancock? Standard Oil? Inland Steel? Give me one architecturally noteworthy building that has a big sign on it.

I was thinking it was more a political thing because Trump is such a right winger. Id guess he's ripped Rahm on Twitter before.

It is a nice looking building, i personally think the name signage makes it look worse... but if there is no ordinance preventing signage then why is this even being discussed, trump is within his right to add the name sign....

Rahm is also a right-winger. He's simply aligned himself with a different set of right-wingers than Trump has.

But he must attempt to play the role of a liberal, right?

I would say populist moreso than liberal.

I would say Taylorist moreso than populist.

My response was to RPB's point that he is presenting himself as a liberal, not that he is one. I assume that you are opining that he is a Taylorist, not that he is presenting himself as one. I'm not sure why you are bringing Duran Duran into this in the first place.

Just Chicago being Chicago! Stupid ass politics! I have no problem with the sign. After all, it was approved & vetted through proper channels!! That is...Trump donated the proper amounts to the proper campaigns.

It's an ugly sign but it was gotten in the right "chicago" way so Rham needs to quit crying. The only person who gets a say so now is Blair Kamin.

I wish Rham was around when the soldier field remodel was being approved. But there too he probably would not have said anything until after the fact.

Maybe this is because I'm from the suburbs but:

C'mon. It is a fakkin building. Who cares?

Are you so ignorant as not to believe these issues arise in the suburbs on an almost monthly basis?

When I wanted to replace the sign on my building in Skokie I had to go before a Sign Committee that only met once a month. They wouldn't approve it the first time and I had to come back again with more details or different drawings or some shit. The committee was three 100 year old Jewish men who I'm sure used to be powerful guys and were desperately hanging on to their ability to tell someone else what to do.

You missed the entire point of the post.

Jackass - this was already approved by the city. Now "fans of the city" are getting upset because they don't like the look of it? Because it mars the views from the river? Because most other buildings don't have signs?

It is a fucking building. Who cares what it looks like?

I've never seen any real outcry over signage in the suburbs. Seasons 52 lights up and it is all gravy.
