Why is that so bad? I think it sucks that they conspired to join the Heat but if he and Bosh came to the Bulls to be with D Rose I wouldn't have objected one bit. I honestly have no problem with athletes taking a bit more control of their career trajectory. My main issue with the "Big 3" crap was the pomposity surrounding it all with "the Decision" and the celebration for winning the free agency period. But I generally think athletes should be more in control of where they go and why.

That's fine, but don't complain when people start discounting championships and accomplishments. If this becomes the norm, I will personally assign more weight to championship teams that were built instead of championship teams that were manufactured through a bunch of guys who wanted to play together. I'm sure many others will also. It's cowardly, IMO.

I don't get how it reflects negatively on the player. Players don't typically put teams together or earn their way onto teams, GM's put teams together. Should Lebron have stayed on the Cavs forever waiting for the GM to find real players and a real coach to put next to him? Sometimes guys get stuck on bad franchises with bad front offices and no amount of loyalty or talent can cancel that out. Why does it make a player look bad to sacrifice money to go somewhere and win a title? To me, the cowardly thing to do would be to take more money to be the solo star of a crappy franchise; he would have remained a big fish in a small pond and could blame everyone around him for their lack of titles.

It absolutely does in my eyes. It's not even so much about teaming up with other stars... it's the fact that he doesn't have to compete against those stars. Look at the East this year. Lebron's biggest challenge was who? Paul George? Joe Johnson?

It waters it down. If you want to move on to a better franchise, fine, I guess. But don't team up with the other two or three best players in the league. It will water down your accomplishments.

Absolutely. The more you deal with those who truly made their own success or worked their way to the top of industry, the more you realize it has little to do with intelligence. IMO, it has a LOT to do with a lack of concern of what others think of you.

And the ability to laugh off mistakes and carry on.

I don't know what is in his portfolio but by all accounts he is on his way to becoming a billionaire. I'm sure he has an interest in the agency his friend runs and the advice Buffett and others have given him has been helpful. Knowing to surround yourself with is an important step to becoming successful. He understood that early.

Huh? The people he surrounded himself with were the ones who encouraged him to go through with "The Decision." I think it has been pretty much agreed upon that he has surrounded himself with morons.

Again, the best basketball player in the world should make millions of dollars. There is no actual proof that he is a good businessman, and even if he was, I don't know what it has to do with liking him as a player.

We all make decisions that in hindsight we regret.

I remember one of Sam Smith's reservations about signing LBJ in 2010 was it would upset Deng since he would be demoted.

LBJ made all the sense in the world back then, but now I'm not so sure you go after him. One thing that Dan forgets is LBJ didn't care about Noah, Rose, Thibs, etc back then, so why would he now? LBJ won't be enough anyway. You need a healthy Rose to make it work. If not then all you've got with LBJ is a better version of the 2009 Cavs.

That is what I find interesting. Their premise has shifted from just have Lebron James and you will win to let's find the best situation personnel and salary cap wise and you will win.

What's wrong with LeBron choosing to do things his way? It takes a lot of courage and it is very risky.

Are you still trolling?

Lebron is too ignorant to recognize the risk. This is evidenced by the fact that he did the "not 1, not 2, not 3..." crap. He thought it was a guaranteed dynasty. It took no courage on his part whatsoever because he is an idiot and so are his teammates.

Lebron is a douche, no doubt about it. He's also just a basketball player. Anything he does, good or bad, is only important in a very small vacuum. I think ultimately people on both sides of the Lebron debate take things way too seriously.

But Danny has taught us that basketball is unique in that there are only five players per side, and if you have the best one he can dominate a game. I'm confused now?

Yes and no.

I don't agree with what he did but at the same time I can acknowledge that it was a risky move that has paid off. The safe and least courageous choice would have been staying in Cleveland.

I'm not questioning your right to like or dislike him. I try not to base my judgments regarding sports on how I view athletes personally. I don't know them personally. I don't root for Lebron James because from a competitive standpoint he crapped out. He backdoored his way to a few rings. It doesn't make him a douchebag a tool or anything else for that matter. The irony in this discussion is that this is the sort of thing that Terry Boers would do. He places value judgments on people that he has never met and attempts to hide behind some source that supposedly knows the athlete or situation. That is precisely what you are doing. My criticism of the Bernstein article is based on his silly conclusion that the Bulls should go after Lebron James because that is the only way for them to win. He keeps making that dumb argument even though Lebron James is now 2 for 5 in the finals. It doesn't make Lebron James a loser it just means that there are other players you can win with.

It's not hard to know what Lebron is all about. He's kind of on television a lot.

Because LeBron James has become an avatar for Black America and if you hate him then you hate all black people all the time for everything. Deadspin told me so.

I'm not asking anyone to root for him or not. My issue is the labeling of the guy as a douchebag, tool, or idiot. I don't think he is any of these frankly. The question that I will ask is what makes him such because he has been called that during this thread.
