So wait, chas. You really expect us to believe you kept the $100 but pedaled your Schwinn as fast as you could and in turn passed up the chance at $1000's?

How did you find the one part of chas's story that was 100% believable and attack for that?

Of course he didn't start taking money out of an open ATM. That is how you end up in jail or dead.

Yup the armored car guy could have lost his job. This was just money on the ground

I would keep a bag of cash even if I had to wait years before I could spend it. I wouldn't go inside an open ATM and take money out though. Too much risk involved for me now.

That's why this sucks. He's attempting to do the right thing and not getting credit (I understand that contradicts RIGHT THING a bit but still)

I'm paying him back out of respect for our friendship. But when I really look at it, are we actually friends? I mean, there's another friend of his whose company just outright stiffed him for almost the same amount and he doesn't go around talking about the "debt" that guy owes him. And I know all relationships and circumstances aren't the same. I've only done a fraction of the business with him that HUGE COMPANY X where the other guy worked did. But it's the principle of the thing. The amount of money here isn't going to kill this guy. I have my suspicions he's written the entire amount off anyway and is working a double dip with me paying him off.

But reputation is a funny thing. This guy thinks he does everything right and he could tell you all the things I do wrong, yet all our mutual acquaintances would rather deal with me. I'm sure that annoys the hell out of him. This guy is so concerned about what others think about him and the truth is a lot of people don't think much of him. And I'm not too concerned about my reputation at all, and most people I know seem to like me. I can't think of a guy who has worked for me who wouldn't again. Every guy who has ever worked for him has left under strained circumstances. How can that be if he's doing everything right and I'm doing everything wrong?

Finally, here's one part of the story that is kind of funny in retrospect and shows you what kind of guy he is. My business was going down. I ended up losing my house and pretty much everything I had. This wasn't some planned bankruptcy. It was a business I believed in to the point of staking everything I had on it. I was busted at 43 years old. (Personally, I wasn't that worried. I've always been good at making money. And I'm like a cat. I land on my feet.) But at the time I was really scrambling. It was a fucking disaster. And of course if I were in his shoes, I'd be thinking about my 18 grand. But I'm a friend of 30 years who is financially annihilated. His 401(k) contribution is gonna be a little short maybe. You go home and complain to somebody else about the money you're out. But this guy blurts right out, "I guess this means I'm not gonna get paid."

It's really not though. I legitimately felt bad that my company ran up a bill with him that we couldn't pay. I've done lots of other business with him through other entities. And I still do business with him to this day. It's easy to say, "don't mix business and friendship", but I'm a Chicagoan and that's what I know how to do. Everybody has a guy for this or a guy for that. Why use a guy you don't know instead?

I may have mischaracterized him talking about my "debt". It isn't like he goes around blabbing about it at parties. This recent incident came in a heated moment where he blurted it out. (The reason he was heated is so silly I wouldn't even mention it. Let's just say he's the kind of guy who looks to be offended and it's not to hard to find offense if one is looking for it in someone's every sentence or gesture.) I found it highly inappropriate, but it's not something that would really make me lose my temper. I'm pretty comfortable with who I am and my own moral code. I can sleep at night.

But at the core, I think you're absolutely correct. I do think he's frustrated by the fact that much of the world (including me as one of his closest real life examples) isn't doing things "right" while he is, and all he gets for being right all the time is the contempt of many of his employees and peers.

No. If you've ever been to one you'd know frank brings 100 toothbrushes and gives then out.

Maybe I didn't make it clear enough. He wasn't doing me a favor. He has a business that provided services required by the business I was running. In fact, I've used his services for many other businesses and continue to do so to this day. I steer the business of my companies his way because we're friends. Not that he does anything less than a good job. I have no complaints about his work and more than that, I know I can trust him. With someone else, I'd have to watch them like a hawk.

You touched on something else there though. I'm sure he has had thoughts like, "look at this motherfucker, living it up when he owes me money." He and I just see things differently. I don't really owe him shit. The U.S. Bankruptcy Court- Northern District has affirmed that fact. I'm paying him the money because we're friends and I'm a good guy. I think he should be appreciative. He thinks I fucked him. I'm curious what other people think.

i re-read the post and now i see what you're saying more. but there are 3 more pages of progression in this story so i don't have much more to offer except to agree that maybe this guy isn't really your "friend".

we throw that word around a lot because there aren't degrees to the word except possibly "best" but "best friend" is something you use when you're 10 years old. or a girl. but then it's "bestie", or BFF.

he seems like a person consumed with self, and that doesn't make a good friend. he strikes me as the type who likes to talk about the awesome poker night he had where he couldn't believe that one guy called him when he had "a full boat" or "the nut straight" or "quads". or he'd give you the sagest advice on fantasy football by saying "if you're up against my squad, just quit now"...and that any year he didn't win the championship, it was just bullshit.
