Do you guys have to deal with any co-workers who constantly lie? Our HR/Business Development person works remotely in another state. Our little office is here IL and we have another small office in another state. There are frequently issues both with myself and clients with her (HR/BD person) not replying to emails or returning phone calls. She always has an excuse though, usually that she did call them or email them but something must have happened and they didn't get the message. Or she's SOOOO busy working on something else and hasn't time but will do it right away, etc.

She's been with the company for probably 15 years or so, has apparently been doing this since before I was here, has apparently been allowed to get away with it, and there is probably nothing I can do about it. It is aggravating as hell though as things she is involved in take far longer to get resolved than they should.

How do you guys deal with situations like this?

Sleep with her

Bring it up to your boss, but also have a plan ready to show how changing the situation would benefit the company.

If you can show how things would improve, and take ownership of it, a company will probably give you a shot to fix it.

She frequently makes reference to hold old she is so I was hoping that maybe she'll retire soon, but people like that never seem to leave. She's apparently getting paid for not doing a whole hell of a lot, so why would she give that up?

She's the only person in our company who does what she does. My former boss, whose position I have had for the last two years, told me what she was like and that our boss likely thinks that it's too much of a hassle to get rid of her, hire someone new, and train them.

That's how I lost my last job. You'd think that Christie Hefner would be more open to bawdy humor, but that was not the case.

That's where you come in. You hire them and train them.

It's costing your company money when your BD person is lazy and non-responsive to clients.

When you email her, send her another email if she doesn't reply in 5 minutes. Then another. Then another, and another, and another, etc.

Send with return receipt so you know when/if she opens the e-mail. And yes, every office has habitual liars. After a whaile, you realize these folks are just delusional. They are lying without intent.

I don't do what she does and don't know how to do a good portion of what she does, so I couldn't train someone else to do it. Her replacement would have to have a certain skillset and be trained by our boss.



I think that's the case here. I thought it was just me, but she apparently does it to everyone. I think it falls under George's "It's not a lie if you believe it." theory. She lies so much that it's become ingrained in her personality and she's convinced herself that she's not actually lying.

I'm certainly not the greatest employee in the world, but I'm responsive to my co-workers and our clients and get my stuff done. Like most people, I get aggravated by people who are shitty at their jobs, either because they're idiots or they just don't give a fuck, but I'd actually be less irritated by someone who made an honest effort but sucked at their job than by someone who doesn't do their job and then lies about it.



Until my boss retired and I got her job, I had never had any interaction whatsoever with her boss (who is also my boss). They have worked together for 15 years or so and aside from what I said earlier I don't really know the dynamics of their relationship. However, in a conversation with him a few weeks ago about an issue that had become convoluted I did indicate that I often have difficulty communicating with this person and often feel left in the dark. He said I can feel free to contact him if I feel like I'm not getting the answers I need, which is great, but I don't want it to seem like I'm constantly going over her head or whining to him every time she is unresponsive. If I did that he'd probably soon regret that he ever said that in the first place.

He is often copied on emails to her about unresolved issues. I'm sure this behavior has been going on for years before I was involved at this level and if she hasn't been told to shape up or ship out by now I doubt if it will happen because I'm irritated.

Sometimes I think I should just accept that no matter where you work there are always going to be people like this and I should just do my job to the best of my abilities, collect my check, and try not to let it aggravate me too much.

if you arent this ladies direct supervisor it isn't your place to do anything. If you want to complain about not getting responses let your direct supervisor know you are having issues getting prompt service and then its your boss and her boss who have to deal with any potential discipline or action
