Scully was a fine broadcaster. So was Ernie Harwell. But I don't think they were the type of promoters for live attendance that bigfan is talking about. Harry was pretty much one of a kind. He made the ballpark seem like the place to be. Scully tells you what's happening in the game, but I don't think anyone listening to him feels they're missing something by not being there.

When I discuss this subject this is exactly what I mean by only a special announcer brings them to the ballpark. Most others are attendance neutral at worst.

Uecker was a goof like Harry to a lesser degree. Did he fill county stadium?

you really want to compare attendance and population bases of the Brewers vs. white sox?

What are the criteria for greatness? Why are some franchises "great" when others are not? Why would anyone think Detroit is any greater than the White Sox, Red Sox, or Indians?

That reminds me that I heard Theo in that Score interview last week when he said he was going to put the Cubs back in "their rightful place". What is their "rightful place"? Last place?

why you be so silly? you know what greatness is. World Championships, winning baseball teams, HOF players. the imagination of little kids lying in bed on the farm at night listening to staticy (sp?) radio signals.

The White Sox are a sorry ass franchise considering 100+ years of history.

The Tigers have 4 World series wins and the White Sox have three. There must be a fine line to greatness there.

Would your first post be about the White Sox gameday experience you haven't been to in 20 years?

Stoneroses can also laugh at the fact the Yankees & Cubs both have 44 guys in the HOF.

You're really counting pennants from the 1800s, jimmy? You're probably the only guy who was living when those happened.

It will never cease to amuse me how virulently angry Dan gets about someone being bad at their job while having his name attached to this show.

In regard to Hawk, just wait til he is gone and they get some vanilla ass loser that is boring as fuck. Those who hate Hawk so much will realize how perfect he was for the Sox when he is gone

No. Don't you understand? That announcer will increase attendance by 1 million fans a year.

1900 is widely recognized as the demarcation of so-called "modern baseball". As the chart posted by RPB shows, outside of the Yankees and Cardinals, everyone else is pretty much in the same boat. for most teams 5 championships is a lot. To call the Tigers a great franchise and the Sox horseshit is just negative Sox fan talk.

Ok cool, but no WS championships for 100 years is pretty horseshit.

Let's face it. Both the Cubs and White Sox for the majority of the "modern baseball" world have been horseshit.

This year they are both just keeping up their reputations.

Since we are using arbitrary numbers, 1 since 2000 is pretty good!

That's not really true though. The Cubs were the elite team in the early part of the twentieth century. Then they were strong in the thirties. The Sox went 17 straight winning seasons in the 50s and 60s. How many teams have done that?

The Cubs well-earned reputation as losers comes from their post-war failures wherein they didn't have a winning season from 1946 until 1963. Then they were good for a few years in the late 60s and early seventies and couldn't win a division and then bad again until '84. They've been a normal team since then.

What are talking about RFDC? Sox are serious contenders.
