What are the criteria for greatness? Why are some franchises "great" when others are not? Why would anyone think Detroit is any greater than the White Sox, Red Sox, or Indians?

1900 is widely recognized as the demarcation of so-called "modern baseball". As the chart posted by RPB shows, outside of the Yankees and Cardinals, everyone else is pretty much in the same boat. for most teams 5 championships is a lot. To call the Tigers a great franchise and the Sox horseshit is just negative Sox fan talk.

That's not really true though. The Cubs were the elite team in the early part of the twentieth century. Then they were strong in the thirties. The Sox went 17 straight winning seasons in the 50s and 60s. How many teams have done that?

The Cubs well-earned reputation as losers comes from their post-war failures wherein they didn't have a winning season from 1946 until 1963. Then they were good for a few years in the late 60s and early seventies and couldn't win a division and then bad again until '84. They've been a normal team since then.
