In 1981 JR bought the Sox for $19MM and the Tribune bought the Cubs for $20MM.

That's not really true though. The Cubs were the elite team in the early part of the twentieth century. Then they were strong in the thirties. The Sox went 17 straight winning seasons in the 50s and 60s. How many teams have done that?
.

They made up for it with 10 losing seasons in their next 12

The Cubs well-earned reputation as losers comes from their post-war failures wherein they didn't have a winning season from 1946 until 1963. Then they were good for a few years in the late 60s and early seventies and couldn't win a division and then bad again until '84. They've been a normal team since then.

In the 42 years of my lifetime as a fan (since '72), the Cubs have had only 10 seasons above .500. In fact, it took them from '72 to '04 to have two winning seasons in a row.

I'm sick of the daily Hawk bashing. I know they claim it's not personal, but to devote segment(s) almost daily to ripping him, sometimes name calling, etc., there's no doubt in my mind that some of it has to be personal.

Speaking only for myself, I watch far fewer White Sox games than I otherwise would; solely due to the unprofessional broadcast. It's just not a pleasant listen for me. Hawk is similar to Bernstein in a lot of ways; even when he's right about something, the way he makes his point is so self-congratulatory and annoying. However, I don't know that the decrease in ratings due to alienated viewers like me is significant; I'm sure there are plenty of offsetting viewers who love his style and only watch because of him. As a White Sox fan, I can only hope for my own sake that the day will come when either the TV or radio broadcast is a solid listen. I am still upset over the loss of John Rooney...

never a big Rooney fan - he came off as a big phony to me, but maybe that's part of the gig when you work for JR.

There must be one outstanding minor league or college play-by-play guy with a love of baseball, a pleasant personality, and a good voice. There MUST be one right? Instead we are subjected to a collection of JR's misfits who can't get a baseball job on their own merits.

This show is so dumb.

Lebron cares deeply about his legacy.

I do not like Hawk, but I find him entertaining. He is certainly better than having a vanilla, boring broadcaster. But, the Sox could do a lot better. I think the best baseball broadcasters are good storytellers, and the problem with Hawk is that his stories are just dumb and harken back to the 60's and 70's.

Pat Hughes is my favorite. He is such a pleasant listen.

I understand it is news today and the NBA hot stove has its popularity but this going so deep and far with them has to be just a troll job. Or just lazy radio.

What do I know I like Farmio and DJ. Great radio background noise for me in the garage or something.

I used to love Jon Miller. Just a happy guy with a nice voice. Loved the game. Didn't get involved in conspiracy theories or other idiotic ideas.

-----

I don't HATE Farmio but he's odd. Another one of these chip on his shoulder types.

Farmio has a strange delivery. I listen to that pairing and never really had an issue with the broadcast. It's just blah.

That's what happens when you take athletes with no radio experience or natural skill for it and make them play-by-play guys. Idiotic. I could fill a volume of the Encyclopedia Idiotica with all the stupid shit the Sox do.

He always seems bored or annoyed with his chosen profession of watching baseball games and describing them to people. Like, I'm sorry that you're not golfing instead, dude.

I'm sure Farmio sounds exactly the same on the golf course.

"When I make this shot I'll be one under par" has to be so annoying by the 12th hole.

As much as these guys attack Hawk on a regular basis, they are in love with Stone. If you listen to a Sox game, he brings up W-L record on a regular basis, mention's RBI's, and I haven't heard him mention any sort of sabermetric's ever. I like Stone, but he not only gets a free pass from the smart show on the Score, but they ignore his unwillingness to embrace stats the way the way they hate on Hawk.

I keep thinking this thread is about woody not hawk.

I don't really like him. I don't know if I'd be more of a fan if somebody else broadcast the game. Bigfan is right about them not selling the product though.

Bingo. Stone sucks too. And like you say, Stone speaks of meaningless stats and doesn't understand the new age baseball metrics and/or outright rejects them.

Stone has never been good. I know it's popular to say it's cuz of Hawk but he sucked with the Cubs too. It's always been something that Chicago media people say about him - that he's great. He's not. He's actually quite boring, not funny and pretty much states the obvious on all broadcasts. Seriously, listen to things he says. It's pretty much nothingness at all times. He's not the insightful, smart baseball guy that our stupid media claim that he is. Like you said, B&B like to lick him. He's actually a dumb ass. And pretty much a prick.

Stone's pitching analysis used to be pretty damn good. He would walk you through the pitcher thought process and explain where the pitcher was likely going next. I have no idea if he still does this. He's always been a dullard. And gay.

I didn't think so. I thought he was the same boring broadcaster we see now that simply stated the obvious.

True that, Spauldo. Now that the Sox are officially out of it we don't have to watch much of it.

But B&B are right about Hawk. He's really has gone "Bat-shit Crazy". Started last year and it's getting worse this year.

Ya know, I know Hawk is aware of all the shit B&B say about him. I actually think Hawk has decided to go "Bat shit crazy" and say more stupid shit just to spite B&B.

Is there any chance that Dan is trying to build a case that Hawk is causing a decline in attendance at U.S. Cellular Field and, consequently, a decline in the number of people listening to White Sox games on the radio as a way of explaining away the declining ratings of his own show? He may be planning on trying to tie the two together. "People turn off the games on TV because of Hawk and then lose interest in the team altogether. They don't even bother to listen to the radio broadcast. That's why the numbers for my time slot are so low. It's not because my show is terrible, it's because of Hawk."

I don't believe that Hawk is causing people to not go to White Sox games, and I don't believe that B&B's declining ratings are solely due to the performance of the White Sox. People who go to the game don't hear Hawk. If you want to watch a White Sox game without hearing him your alternatives are to either watch the game with the sound down or to actually go to the game.

Hawk is a dying breed. Baseball needs more characters like him. He will be missed when he's gone. It will be boring, vanilla guys from there on out.

Shocking bigfan would start a thread like this. Also, thanks once again for letting us know you were flying. I think its like 8 different threads you have mentioned it in. You went to Vegas. We get it.
