Apparently if I root for and want the US to succeed...I would also root for a turd wrapped in a flag.

Asswipe logic...par for the course for this show!

I don't understand the hatred for the US for losing (as if they did it on purpose?) and still making the round of 16. Let's say the Cubs needed a Cincinnati loss to make the playoffs on the final day. Would that cheapen their playoff appearance by "backing in" to the playoffs?

Well, you wouldn't necessarily be cheering a Cubs accomplishment so much as a Cincy failure in that case, so virulent "rah rah" would, at least on the surface, seem a tad peculiar.

Its easy to understand; the USMNT coach said they weren't as good as the rest of the team, Bernsie jumped all over that and started declaring that the US had no chance and we shouldn't even care. Now all he wants is for the USMNT to lose and lose quickly so he can be proven right. During the first US/Ghana game this year you could hear Bernsie actively getting excited for Ghana when they had a scoring chance and then disappointed when they didn't score.

What's interesting is that if it were one of the favorites backing in they would be totally on board because it would be a shame if some "undeserving " team that has no chance of winning it all got in instead of studs like Brazil or Germany.

Not sure why B&B think stars can only be added through free agency. There is this concept called "trade".

Very sporadic listening for the first time since I walked into Dan's stupidity from last week (I know, which part) .... anyway, I just heard a fun Mike Murphy drop and then Dan said they were going to make a new friend in a moment ... what's that mean?

edit: Apparently drag racing.

If this isn't mandated from above I'll eat my hat that I don't own.

Let's be realistic.

Say the Cubs needed a Reds loss to make game 162 in order to then make it to a 1 game play in against another wild card team so that the fans could claim they made the playoffs once this decade...not cheap at all.

It is. They had a guy from Joliet on to plug a drag race last year, too. Spots ran for it. So yeah.

Did Dan dig into the the Joliet raceway guys about those mean Joliet hockey moms that treated him so brusquely?

Literally have no idea what was said ... probably "listened" for eight minutes, but didn't hear one word ... turned it off and I don't think I came back.

This show is an old habit that's not dying quite as hard as the old adage might otherwise suggest.

Have we talked at all about how Dan is kind of in a bind here, as the typical USA soccer fans who wear scarves and annoy everyone are generally snobbish liberals who whine that the United States aren't European enough? They may wrap themselves in "patriotic" imagery, but it's a self-aware joke; there aren't any deez-n-doze meatballs who go around giving a fuck about soccer.

I agree--I think that berns showing disdain for u.s. soccer fans just shows his hatred for all things not him, as the guys watching premiership league games at the old Globe pub or Sedgwick's on Saturday mornings are exactly the kind of guys that Dan grew up with. He just likes to hate, or at least likes to do it as a bit. And I'm still startled that TB's got 500k to spank with...

Anytime he sees someone enjoying something, it's his personal mission to inform them that they are enjoying things wrong. It's Dan's ongoing war against fun.

It also shows what a truly miserable bastard he is, for all his talent. I have a love/hate thing with him because I can relate to his need to constantly manage everybody's else's feelings because my own feelings are unpredictable and messy, and as a guy who actually has a shingle, I can see his need to pretend to be a meatball at home (never believed that for a second) is really about a guy who hates feeling, period. But the glory of all of it is he manages to give some of us some good feelings, or at least a good hate listen.

The soccer people are weird though. These massive watch parties that suddenly show up in places like Grant Park for a sport that barely exists for the other 3.5 years are just bizarre. If you were from a foreign country and only visiting for these two weeks you'd think soccer was the number one sport in America. It will be a rumor here(besides Saturday mornings at bars) by August.

I get into the Olympics too just like I'm watching the World Cup but I'm not going to Grant Park to watch speed skating or the pentathalon.

The rest of the time, they're going around trying to convince you that MLS isn't a glorified rec league. They're up in Seattle wearing scarves and singing songs on their "March to the Match."

That's the point Curious Hair was making; American world cup fans are disingenuous band-wagon posers who pretend that they care and know a lot about soccer once every 4 years when it's "important" which is exactly what Bernsie does with every single sport. Bernsie hates hockey until the Blackhawks are good then suddenly his kid plays and he's and expert and this generation is being raised on hockery and hockey is here to stay. That's the exact same thing that happens with the world cup fans.

Ad hockery: reliance on temporary solutions rather than on consistent, long-term plans

What an interesting typo.

I remember when he said that the entire sport of ice hockey was destined to die because the world was getting "warmer" and "browner," supposing that Canada would stop having both winters and indoor ice rinks, and that no one with impure non-Aryan blood could ever play hockey. This means that somehow, Dan becoming a bandwagon Hawks fan made him less of a dipshit.

I would argue that having the right(ish) idea for the wrong reason makes him even worse. It's not like he's learned anything, he's just applying the same idiocy he's always brought to a new situation. He hates something when it's not popular but when it is then he's the foremost expert. It makes me wonder what Dan Bernstein the great Penn State crusader would think of man-boy love if he lived in ancient Greece. Look at the bodies!
