Probably applies to all sports. I'm helping coach a team of boys and girls 7-11 years old. There are two boys that listen to me, the rest of them have no interest in structured practice, no respect for what I say and just do whatever they want during practice. Help?

Welcome to teaching/coaching any age/level.

Your main task, should you choose to accept it: find the right motivation.

I'm no soccer expert but I coached about 15 or 20 seasons all together. I was head coach for both my daughter and son's teams. If the head coach doesn't work with you and make sure the kids are respecting you, then you guys need to get together. Have you run any drills that you created?
In drills, the less standing around the more the kids are involved. It's a bad idea to have long lines waiting for turns to run a drill. Good Luck!

drills are stupid.

Roll a ball out on the field.

Tell the kids to kick it around.

Stand on the sidelines flirting with the hot soccer moms.

It's nice for parents to see an effort by the coaches but we did a lot of scrimmaging, too.

Rule # 1: Never try to coach without a whistle.

I'm not kidding. Makes a big difference.

Yeah. Of course this is way wrong (stunned).

Aside from football............good coaches don't need a whistle. They make things easier, of course.

Go to a great hoops head coach's practice.
Count the number of times he blows a whistle.

I love the baseball coaches that blow whistles. And soccer. And volleyball. And.....wait - pick a sport!

Embarrass the kids into getting their shit together. Hold up the entire practice when some kid fucks around and make it obvious its him holding it up

or just yell at them like a man

The scene where the butcher truck drives onto the field to drop off the Italian kids is a great!

The truck comes to a sliding stop and everyone jumps back, which I dont think is planned as you can have a great stunt driver, I dont think you are lining up 12 kids and telling them not to move and dont worry the truck will stop a few feet from you.

Everyone jumps back...but not Ditka. Arms folded and he doesnt flinch!

Hank Haney has said a number of times that the whistle was his most important tool he used when teaching. It seemed to be most effective when he would blow it right in the middle of somebody's back swing.

Just withhold water from those little cocksuckers and see how fast they fall into line.

Whatever you do, don't let them know that basketball, baseball, football, or hockey exist. Just like much of the rest of the world, the only thing keeping them from liking more interesting sports is ignorance.

No one would even hire him as an assistant.

Thanks guys.

I'm trying to hold off on the whistle. Head coach is a good guy, but I don't want to step on him by suggesting too many different drills.

As far as motivation goes, I think that's where I'm lacking right now. Most likely these kids had bad coaches before us because they started complaining right off the bat about how stupid the drills were and that they didn't want to do anything but scrimmage. My hope is that after they get their butts handed to them in the first game, I'll be able to use it as motivation.

I've seen how important keeping all the kids active in drills is. I found it worked really well with girls, but the boys get tired of the drills after about 2 minutes.

These days, when you do this in suburban youth sports, you develop a stigma that never goes away. Sad to say, but the Bobby Knight mold has been melted. In my daughter's league we had one guy who disciplined his team (no snacks after game, and they had to run) for ending their unbeaten streak, and he has already been banned from coaching next year by The Board.

I was kidding. No need to yell.

And that coach was you wasnt it?

No. In fact, although I usualy do love old school methods like that, I actually can't stand this guy. Both him and his wife are big time jerkoffs. He just loooooves boorishly shouting shit across the diamond to other coaches, referring to them only by last name.

7-11 is a weird age grouping. I wouldnt yell at a 7 year old, but by 11 I might.

God bless that guy

I mean he fucked with what? Maybe 30-40 college kids? And made millions laugh. That's a net positive.

I did tell the two older boys that I expected them to be leaders on the team. If they act like the little ones do, then there is no way the team will win. They brooded for about 5 minutes and suddenly seemed to show interest. Not sure if that was right or not.

The age difference makes it pretty difficult.
