That's it. bernstein breaks them down into Sambos and Bucks. When Ty called to complain bernstein shushed him like he was talking to a child rather than a grown man. I'm surprised he didn't call him "boy".

But it goes deeper and weirder than even that--both B & B are too smart to ever call a black guy "boy," but they just can't help themselves in making the peculiar way they've racialized their show a constant theme. For example, I've been listening since day 1 (hate listening since Goff left, as I thought he would call this bullshit out at times) and I think both TB and berns give a much wider berth to crazy black guy callers and would never go off on them like they would to a caller they thought was white: it's churlish and paternalistic and just icky...

I find adults saying the word 'icky' very unsettling.

You lost me. They've said essentially the same things I have said since last night. I doubt anyone here thinks I don't like black people. Looking at my Facebook feed just about everyone but the most loyal Rose fan feels the same way.

I think Rose is doing it (or not doing it) out of stubbornness and ego. B&B were saying before it's because he's dumb.

I agree. It sounds like they believe he is being influenced by his brother and B.J. If they are getting him to make all of these poor decisions then I believe that he needs to grow up and take control of his life. That's the smart thing to do.

I've heard them call many people dumb and I don't think they are doing it because he is black.

It's the way they're saying it. Do you really not recognize it?

And I don't think it's a matter of "liking" black people. I'm sure some of your best friends are black.

B&B are latently racist and sometimes blatantly racist about enough subjects that we dont need to inject it into this discussion as well.

I just didn't hear it that way. Maybe it's because I am in agreement with them on the recruitment issue. I just don't believe that is what they are doing.

What poor decision is he making? He may be making decisions that don't suit you as a Bulls fan or Jerry Reinsdorf. I'm not so sure he's making bad decisions for himself, as frustrating as that may be for someone who wants him to listen to doctors paid for by a team with interests that may be divergent from his own and those who wish he would call Carmelo Anthony and beg him to come to Chicago.

I did. I'm all in on this free agent stuff. I believe he heard what he wanted to hear. No offense to The Lodge but it happens a lot. If I said the same thing he wouldn't have an issue with it.

Isn't this the kind of talk about Rose that got Dan the kind of attention he doesn't want from Deadspin and NBA TV last December?

Ty was making a hell of a point. If calling Reinsdorf cheap is "dangerous", what the fuck is calling Rose dumb? They didn't want to hear it. Instead they shushed him and then focused on the fact that he said the Score is owned by Reinsdorf, something I took figuratively rather than literally and quite a natural belief for anyone who listens to the show regularly.

Being a fan does influence my opinion. I believe that he has taken a lot of PR hits because of his advisers. It has hurt his brand. No one is asking him to beg anyone. Making a phone call and telling a guy you would like him to join you won't hurt. Especially considering you picked up the phone and called Kirk Hinrich and asked him to join you.

If he really wanted to win a championship I think he would want all the help he can get. To come out and again say that he isnt going to recruit just adds to the bad PR he got from the medical issue. Essentially the last two years have been one long PR nightmare for him. I think right now his best interests are playing up to the fans to get some of his good will back.

I don't have a problem with that viewpoint coming from you or Nas or any hardcore Bulls fan. It's that Boers and bernstein are constantly jumping around from philosophy to philosophy. One day they're warriors for social justice. The next day they're just idiots going for laughs. One day they're using the "Gay!" drop. The next day they're press agents for Jason Collins. If they're now playing meatball fans I can understand the frustration with Rose. But in the larger sociological picture, the shit they're saying and the way they're saying it comes off as part of the racist status quo.

His recruiting of Hinrich contradicts his statement. I think he made his statements on the eve of free agency for a reason. It's a very selfish reason too. He wants to be the best player and his group is willing to sabotage the Bulls free agency chances to get this done.

Random thought I have is maybe he is so tight with Love that he is just staying out of the whole thing. Melo or Love comes and he doesn't want to upset anyone.

I used to say this all the time. Anyone who is obsessed with race as Bernsie seems like a racist to me. It's hard to believe people would go on air and say "don't draft white players". Even if you truly believe that, why would you ever say that publicly?

JORR also makes some good points in this thread. I never understood how they are social crusaders (CTE and gay rights), and then just dumb radio guys, and then make racist and homophobic references, and then accuse callers of all sorts of nasty stuff.

What a terrible show. You guys reaffirm my reason for not listening every day.

Bernstein going with his classic liberal racism. I'm surprised hes not invoking his Englewood upbringing as to why he won't listen to massa. He wants Rose to be a noble savage and do what is right for boss.

Isn't Bernsie the one who used to tell poor people to move out of the bad neighborhoods? Geesh what a horribly conflicted individual he is. So self righteous.

I never understand the difference between what Bernsie says at times and Jimmy the Greek.

Berns uses lots of $10 words, that's the main difference

That and the fact that Jimmy the Greek never presented himself as some kind of man of erudition who had every answer to every question the way bernstein does.

For example, one would think a guy with the vast knowledge of a dan bernstein would understand the freighted history of calling a black man by only his first name. I realize we're talking about a highly paid athlete and celebrity and that sometimes they become so familiar that one name will suffice, as in Reggie or LeBron. But when you're taking a grown man to task for his decisions and suggesting that he is infantile and stupid, it's probably ill-advised to constantly refer to him only as "Derrick" within such a context.
