Straily will be the Arrieta of this years trade deadline.

He is a major league ready arm that is going to be a real nice addition.

What do you base that on? That's a bold statement.

His season last year for the A's and the recent work he has done in the minors.

Quote:
Straily pitched extremely well, throwing 7 innings and striking out 9 batters while allowing just one run. His breaking pitches were working extremely well, getting a ton of swings and misses, including eight of his nine strikeouts. He probably still needs to show a bit more given how well the team is doing, but you can see what he can be if he is right.

If he is a legit #4, that'd be great all things considered but I don't see him being at Arrietta's level.

Agreed about them viewing Russell as a big time stud. Also Shark got hit hard in June.

PTBNL coming too, McKinney was a 1st Rounder last year and Straily did win 10 games for the A's last year but clearly they must view Russell as a big time talent (which seems to be the consensus throughout baseball).

McKinney hitting better than Almora at high A.

Early word from @susanslusser is that Straily goes to Iowa. So Derek Johnson gets the first crack at him. Bosio will wait his turn.

Good Baez insurance. Would've liked pitching but excellent shortstops are even rarer to find than pitching.

Okay, I'm confused. Why did we need another shortstop? We have Castro and Baez already.

Not too often are top-15 prospects exchanged. The baseball commentariat will likely call it a win for Chicago as prospects are in vogue right now. Often analysis of these trades assumes the prospect will pan out and provide 6 years of cost control.

Not really sure if I like the trade. I guess if a core belief is TINSTAAPP then you go ahead and keep collecting highly rated positional prospects. Looking at the trade as selling high on Hammel and Shark while buying low on an injured Russell and struggling Straily smells. I guess I'm just glad Shark is gone. For all the advanced metrics supporting him he seemed to always find a way to fuck up.

SS are seen as being the most athletic position on the field. Should have no problem moving around if need be.

Also make nice trade pieces for arms in the future

Option A: Castro SS, Baez 3B, Russell 2B, Alcantra CF, Bryant RF, Soler LF. Option B: Cubs make a trade.

Plus Rizzo at 1B and Schwarber at C? 900 runs scored per season.

If they didn't make a move last year when they were throwing fucking Kozma out there damn near every day, they surely won't do it with Peralta, who's been better in every single aspect of the game, in the first of a four year deal.

Detroit only needs a fill in for this rest of this year.... remember the guy they got from Boston in the Gracia/Peavy deal.... Jose Iglesias.

The Yankees, Mets, twins, Royals and Marlins could be interested

The point is, they do need a shortstop. How much longer is their window open? Dombrowski has a history of going for it now. Besides having an atrocious bullpen, SS is their next biggest hole.

When does Theo ever get back at least one major league ready bat in any of these flips? 19 and 20 year olds will be coming major league ready when IMU is a crabby old Cub fan.

Well, the tweet you were responding to was as silly as what you said. There's almost no chance that such a lineup will ever be carded.

I think the idea would be that Peralta moves over to third. Not sure what they would do with Carpenter, but he doesn't really slug like a third baseman ideally does.

Perhaps because there are bats that appear to be pretty major league ready that are coming shortly? The organization needs major league ready arms that are young and do not want to be overpaid.

Theo says plans/hopes for this to be last year of process when Cubs are "obvious sellers" in summer.

Hot Stove Cubbies ‏@HotStoveCubbies
Hearing after the #Yankees lost out on Hammel and Samardzija they have some interest in starter Edwin Jackson.

Jesse Rogers ‏@ESPNChiCubs
Theo says there was no pitcher avail in trade market that "was close" to the talent of Addison Russell

Patrick Mooney ‏@CSNMooney
Theo says Straily will head to Iowa and get a chance to regroup for a few starts, the way Arrieta did last season.

Jesse Rogers ‏@ESPNChiCubs
Also says 1-2 from Wada, Hendricks, Beeler, Rusin group will get a chance

Paul Sullivan ‏@PWSullivan
Addison to Double-A Tenn. McKinney to Class-A Daytona.

Jesse Rogers ‏@ESPNChiCubs
McKinney prob in LF and RF...Almora stays in CF, per Theo

Jesse Rogers ‏@ESPNChiCubs
Theo says he doesn't see a quick flip of any of these guys later this month, etc.

Jesse Rogers ‏@ESPNChiCubs
Theo reached out to Castro's agent just to say they like what he's doing...still doesnt see moving him off SS

Patrick Mooney ‏@CSNMooney
Theo calls Starlin a centerpiece to plans and says Cubs SS shouldn't be looking over his shoulder.

Joe O with a good reminder of the work of Theo in the last couple of years:

Samardzija, Hammel, Garza, Feldman, Dempster, Maholm FOR
Russell, McKinney, Straily, Edwards, Grimm, Olt, Ramirez, Arrieta, Strop, Hendricks, Villanueva, Chapman, Vizcaino.

Not too shabby.

We'll never know what else was offered unless Hussra finds a way to hack into CubbieNet but:

Quote:
Joe O with a good reminder of the work of Theo in the last couple of years:

Samardzija, Hammel, Garza, Feldman, Dempster, Maholm FOR
Russell - top 15 prospect no guarantees
McKinney - year old 1st who knows
Straily - nice serviceable starter with 3 ceiling
Edwards - who knows. Bet he ends up a reliever
Grimm - just a guy
Olt - pinch hitter/glove man
Ramirez - nice bullpen arm. I like
Arrieta - great but started season with arm issue. His new pitch is described as a slider/cutter. I get afraid with increased slider usage. Arm troubles tend to follow anecdotally speaking.
Strop - solid bullpen arm
Hendricks - who knows? Solid innings eating 4?
Villanueva - probably a nobody. Filler
Chapman - buster
Vizcaino - sucks at AAA with 10+ ERA and injury history.

They've done alright but the overvaluation of prospects kind of shows with the haul so far. Other than Ramirez and Arrieta they've been meh. Obviously Russell and McKinney too early to tell

Better then alright. Not one Hall of Fame pitcher, in the bunch that Theo traded away.

You can't say that. Theo traded away a lot of talented pitchers. It's still early so In no sense should bouquets be thrown at Theo yet

Only Shark was a homegrown pitcher. Garza was a bad Hendry trade and not a #1. Everyone else was picked off the scrap heap. He has turned shit into gold. None of these pitchers are Hall of Fame pitchers.
