I won't speak for JORR, but I don't have a problem with optimism. I think the Cubs have reasons to be hopeful for the future. However, many Cubs fans seem to go past the point of optimism to the point where they think success is pretty much inevitable.

It doesn't usually come off as optimism though. It's more like arrogance.

What's the difference? How is me being excited about them and being optimistic about them arrogant?

The word arrogance would suggest I think I'm better than another fan. So how is me being excited about my team, coming off as me thinking I'm a better fan than you?

Honestly, I think the word arrogance more would apply to the the non-Cubs fans trying to knock them down while mocking their optimism.

I think it's arrogant to say that losing ~100 games a year while attendance plummets and television rights dwindle down to negative value will naturally and inevitably lead to sustained dominance.

Which is actually arrogance, since you are suggesting you know more than the people who believe that.

Not a single Cubs fan... actually, not a single Theo worshipper (me included), thinks it is "inevitable." I'm optimistic about it. I don't believe it's a foregone conclusion.

And really, when you think about it... any kind of prediction is arrogant. It's suggesting you know what is going to happen.

And actually, I'm not even optimistic they will have "sustained dominance." I just think they are going to be competing for a long time.

It would be like calling a Clippers fan arrogant.

Me too.

That's the thing. Ive always thought it would be a success if they could build a team that wins 85+ year in and year out. Not dominance.

Close to 400 losses in four years, I'd like to do a little better than 85 wins. Paying out the ass for Jason Marquis got us 85 wins.

You know who wins 85+ every year? The Cardinals.

85+ includes some 90 win seasons too. Contend every year. That is all non Yankee fans can ask for.

But that's exactly the point. A Clippers fan would never be dumb enough to accuse a Mavericks fan of being jealous. But somehow the Cub fan thinks his team- and by extension himself- is superior to the White Sox. I even heard Epstein himself talk about the Cubs' "rightful place" as if they are somehow a superior franchise that deserves to be looked at differently than the Cleveland Indians.

I am not sure when the "arrogance" started regarding the inevitability of Cubs prospects versus others. Maybe when sports radio and all the talk was too much and I noticed. I seem to feel it was the Patterson, Keyshnik, Pie, Choy time frame.

Besides Thomas, Mags and some of the pitching I do not remember too much gag like this on my side. Maybe some Beckham or Borchard? Anyway, with anything clouded by your own perception. And in my last post I should have written "perceived arrogance".

Wow. That's crazy and I can see why you're worked up if that's what you believe.

But the Cubs get more media coverage. That is fact. It bothers some White Sox fans. Also fact. Does that not qualify as a sort of jealousy?

Wasn't Brian Anderson supposed to be this amazing five-tool player?

Yeah, Mike you have a pretty messed up stereotypical idea of Cub fans.

The flip side would be saying all Sox fans are mulleted tattooed white trash.

There is plenty of hate sent the way of the White Sox from Cubs fans too.

I dont deny that. Im explaining where the "jealousy" thing is valid though.

It's only valid in the sense that saying Cub fans expect sustained dominance is valid. They are both facts that apply to a percentage of the fan base.

I think there is a natural jealousy on both sides of town.

Unless it's a Yankees vs. Mets thing, where literally the Yankees have everything to be jealous of and the Mets have nothing to be jealous of, it's natural.

Can we agree that bitching that the Cubs get more press counts as jealousy?

Probably. There's not that many Sox fans. I don't think that many on this board are jealous of the media coverage the Cubs get. With the way we consume sports media these days it's not really even they unbalanced. You can choose your own coverage.

I guess. It is an interesting thing if someone did a book on the psychology of this rivalry. Anyway, I think I hold resentment toward the above mentioned media favoritism than the fans themselves.

I was so jealous about the Cubs press counts that I had to fire back.
