Paid $650M to Manchester United to advertise Chevy on their jerseys starting next season. Then announce they will be pulling Chevy out of the European market.

Brilliant!

Thought the $650 mill was in the 'Sorry we killed your relatives fund"

Soccer is the future of America so this is good business.

You know, if soccer teams want to sell jersey space to corporations, I guess that's fine. I get that TV timeouts are limited and teams need revenue streams. But if you, the average retail consumer, pay a premium for a soccer jersey and thus pay them to advertise a product, then you are, as the English say, a wanker.

A jersey is already just one big ad for the team, league, and jersey manufacturer. What's one more ad.

Even I'm not so cynical as to conflate a sports team with an airline.

Pure, cynical PR move by the new, post 2009/Chapter 11 General Motors. Any liabilities incurred due to incidents prior to 2009 are the legal responsibility of the "old GM". The GM punching out crappy cars today is a different legal entity; or, in President Romney's view, a different "person" and thus not legally liable for shit the old GM did. However, it's the new GM paying out the money in this fund.

Not surprised they are doing this and bringing in Kenneth Feinberg--the guy who ran the compensation funds for the 9/11 victims, BP victims, the Boston Marathon victims, the Penn State settlement, the Aurora theater shooting victims and the Newton shooting victims. It's superficially good and likely necessary PR.

But why does someone shot watching Batman or a footrace get compensated via a national fund while someone shot in the crossfire in Englewood have to rely on the random kindness of locals and NBA players? Maybe Feinberg needs to set up a fund for the victims of Chicago violence.

Hey, check it out, some dude in Ohio's collecting donations to make potato salad--'murica, fuck yeah!
