If you are only hoping/expecting marginal results, why go through 3 seasons(and maybe more) of being one of the worst teams in the league and applaud it? You should be able to get a great player and a few good ones without losing 300 games in 3 seasons. And I really am not even trying to troll here. What am I missing?

Nothing. A multiple all-star and 2 regulars out of the "top 7" of: Bryant, Baez, Russell, Soler, Almora, Alcantara and Schwarber would be very valuable. Having them contribute for 6 years on the cheap along with Rizzo and Castro would give Tommy Boy no excuses to not go buy FA talent to complement.

Hopefully other less heralded players develop and also become cheap contributors.

I meant that not all on this board but I also deal with general populace. A lot of people are really high on all these guys like they all will hit and promised land HOF awaits. This board is not normal. People that think sensibly about sports or their teams (with exceptions) do not take the time to be here.

Personally I hope you all hit 33% and win one at least. Well that is a lie. Just one. Again, I do not recall until the last couple years maybe any obsession with Sox fans on the minors. It has been fine they are there but lets see what happens in the bigs.

Nobody is being overly optimistic with these Cub kids. Nobody is saying '27 Yankees. You will, however, see more tempered, realistic predictions of being the 90's Braves.

I don't think that is very optimistic even. Pretty rational. I can't imagine Bryant not being a repeat All-Star at this point...I cannot accept him being a bust. His high strikeout rate is acceptable because of his fantastic walk rate...and holy shit can he mash. You don't do what he has done, without hiccups, in the high minors and then completely bust. They just can't teach his talent.

However...I'd hope (HOPE) that Baez can become at least a Pedro Alvarez type...I'd think his average would be a little better than Alvarez' even. And Alcantara...if he can put up a ~.750 OPS at second base? Love it, combined with his speed. And Russell...he is now the Cubs' second best prospect...I hope that turns into at least a 'good' middle infielder. Brandon Phillips at short, with probably less power? Again, it is a hope.

But I picture this Cubs offense with Castro and Rizzo as a base...add whatever you want to call Bryant (me? Future star), and then a guy like Pedro Alvarez and a guy like Brandon Phillips. I'm scared to comp Arismendy Alcantara...I think this guy might be pretty special for a middle infielder. The "other prospect" might end up being one of the better ones.

Obviously, I'm somewhat optimistic. But I think it is somewhat reasonable based on the production we've seen from each so far coupled with the consensus opinions of tens of baseball writers and scouts.

I'm standing behind my Bryant comments 100%. The dude is a machine, and will be in the majors.

You can accept he is Rob Deer or Adam Dunn or Dave Kingman? They have had them before. They even had Sammy Sosa.

I say we know nothing about Abreu then.

Too small of a sample size. Sure, we see it on TV (you can watch Baez's at bats too!) and sure...analysts seem to all think one way. But I mean...what do we actually KNOW? Hmm?

I motion that no one is allowed to comment on a player's ability until they have ten (10) full major league seasons under their belt. At that point...one could be comfortable enough to stand by statements made.

What don't you understand about the difference between the big leagues and the Pacific Coast League? Do you know how many guys have absolutely mashed in the PCL and never made it at all?

I think you look pretty silly comparing the guy who is leading the AL in homers to somebody with a .220 average in Iowa.

Can't speak for Jorr but you are right. He can hit 60 HR's this year and completely tank in a year or two (Kittle). That is my whole point. Cub fans (some) are so desperate for a savior they got bat shit crazy about minor leaguers.

I tend to not doubt anyone until given a reason to doubt. Baez starts slow...and always has...but at the end of every season his numbers are where they need to be for him to continue being a top prospect.

Bryant, Almora, Alcantara, Soler (when he actually plays) ... they all keep progressing. There are no guarantees...but why assume they'll fail?

There is a gray area I'm comfortable being in that lies between 'they're sure fire studs' and 'all prospects are suspects.'

Do you want his exact average? Excuse me for being off by six hits over 330 plate appearances.

I agree with you on Bryant. If I had to guess right now I would predict he is great. Multiple all star. But don't act like mashing in the minors and in the majors are even close to equivalent. We should all feel much better about thinking Abreu will (continue to) be great than we do about Bryant.

IMU basically did in this thread.

So we can accuse anyone of anything if we just add the word basically? Today is going to be awesome.

So, you don't agree with the prediction that the Cubs are poised to become the 90s Braves? It kind of seemed like you did, but you then pulled it back a little.

I said that would be or nearly be best case scenario.

Quite the far cry from guaranteeing it.

Ok, so you think the prediction by denis was crazy too then?

4 games from .500, which would be monumental according to baseball expert Steve Stone.

I think Kris Bryant is poised to become the 90s Ryan Klesko.

I think Kris Bryant is poised to become the 90s Ryan Klesko.

Could do worse. He once had a 40 RBI month in the steroid era.

Nothing has happened to deter the Troy Glaus comparisons

Glaus and Klesko were good players, but with you as a glaring exception, I believe most Cub fans would be sorely disappointed if you told them right now that's what Bryant would be.
