Thomas was a great hitter when he tried to hit line drives. later on he was only a good hitter when he tried to be a home run guy. really dumb guy not to realize this. thomas was incredibly frustrating in a lot of ways. how can you be that bad a firstbaseman? I mean how?

You don't understand what I mean by that? He doesn't have the profile of a power hitter. He didn't strike out. And his walks seemed to be due to his batting eye, not necessarily because guys were working around him.

Anyway, I'm certainly not saying he is beyond suspicion. He played football in the SEC for God's sake. But the Sox had never had a hitter like him and likely never will again. When he came up he seemed like a special, freakish guy. But suddenly there were many like him and some even better.

I just mean that your statement could be used as the #1 reason to suspect most guys were juicers.

Sosa was a singes hitter, until he got so big that those singles turned into HR.
Brady Anderson was a singles hitter until those singles turned into 50 HR one season.

David DeJesus was a solid player for his 1.5 year stay:

2012: .263/.350./.403
2013: .250/.330/.401

For comparison here is the future Hall of Famer Adam Eaton:

2014: .265/.335/.362

He wasn't really an awful fielder. He just couldn't throw.

This is dumb, sorry. Just plain dumb.

They were good free agent signings because the Cubs were able to identify which players were undeserving of being on the scrap heap. He got a ton of value because he was able to pay low dollars for pitching talent that far surpassed what guys getting paid three times as much were doing. He was then able to take advantage of it even more by then flipping said pitchers to competing teams for prospects.

Hammel, Feldman, and Maholm could really not have worked any better than they did.

Oh, I see, resigning players doesnt count today. I agree.

So the scrap heap ones are disqualified (even though they represent MOST of the signings)

I guess if you discount most of his signings and just focus on the couple bad ones, then yeah he's been bad

Sosa was a singes hitter, until he got so big that those singles turned into HR.
Brady Anderson was a singles hitter until those singles turned into 50 HR one season.

But Thomas was the same size his whole life. He's big now. He didn't grow. And Thomas was a great hitter from day one. When he was 21 years old. Sosa was a strikeout king with a bad OBP until the fear of his power had pitchers terrified and he suddenly got on over 40% of the time. I know you see the difference.

Anyway, I think a lot of the "steroid era" was illusory. By that I mean that, sure, it's obvious that guys like Sosa. Bonds, McGwire were gassing up, but I think there were stronger factors at play, namely the balls. And I think MLB has changed the ball now to the point we are in a second (or maybe third) deadball era. That makes more sense than believing entire leagues all started and stopped juicing at the same exact time.

Hatchetman will like this. Outside of Abreu, these White Sox remind me of my first team back in 1969. Beckham is Bobby Knoop. Ramirez is Aparicio. Eaton is Ken Berry. Flowers is Duane Josephson. Sale is Tommy John. and Robin is Don Gutteridge.

you must have been fired up about Carlos May! Only 21. What held that guy back?

I vaguely recall 1977, but 1980/81 is when I really started to get into it. Britt Burns was MY GUY!

He blew off his fucking thumb.

That was the beginning of my hatred of Lou Piniella. How could he have won Rookie of the Year over May? If you look at it, it's really absurd. Anti-White Sox bias.

but Epstien and company have been pretty bad at anything but scrap heap FA signings for the better part of 5 years
Yeah, getting Travis Wood for one year of Sean Marshall and Anthony Rizzo for a guy who's made a season's worth of starts in three years is just horrible.

Unbiased analysts seem to think Epstein has been making great trades.
Trades are a completely different category for obvious reasons.

The undeniable truth is, when given the money to make an impact FA signing, Epstien has not had a good record for the past half decade.

You know this, of course, or else you would not have attempted to change the argument to trades or you would have pointed to the great signings over the past 5 years

You feel emboldened by a decent half season. Rizzo was not a good player last year.

And yet, he was better than Cashner. What does that tell you?

And you have been unrealistic with Rizzo since day one. Thru his great start with the Cubs, his struggles and now his All star caliber first half you have been less than honest.

Interesting interview with Carlos May: http://www.whitesoxinteractive.com/rwas ... 11&id=2449

Dick Allen sounds like one bad-ass mofo. wish I could have seen him play.

Oh man...that was almost a burn. If this was elementary school. And if it was not terrible.

If Hahn would have signed any of those guys, and they performed like they did for the Cubs, you'd be ecstatic.

As bigfan has pointed out innumerable times in reference to Don Cooper, those are low cost lottery ticket signings that every team makes in spring training...like the Baker signing (oops!). Penny stocks. A good team signs those players to work at AAA until an injury results. They are starters for the Cubs.

Now, on to the examples of targeted guys signed to impact the team that worked.

Hell, on Epstien's first day with the Cubs he pretty much issued a mea culpa on his recent FA work.

Nothing wrong with De Jesus but he was always considered more of a corner OF fielding talent forced into the CF role because of lack of power. Eaton is clearly a better fielder at the third most important fielding position.

More ridiculousness. The guys named are starters on every MLB team.

And I love you trying to celebrate Baker. As if hitting at 80% on so called penny stocks is something to be ashamed of. Keep digging.

Like IMU pointed out, if Hahn did that you would be having a parade for him.

Also, those guys will impact the team for years to come via the players that were acquired in trades for them.

And the Cubs are about 3 games different from the White Sox. So you can stop with the "only on the Cubs" stuff

Did you want to revisit your thought that Samardzija is a #4 on any team but the Cubs?

Was that waaaaay wrong or did Theo just get 2 top prospects and an MLB Starting pitcher for a #4 guy?

I can't imagine how long the good golphin blowjob on Hahn would be if he took a failed reliever, converted him into a starter, marketed him as an ace and traded him for a top-15 SS prospect.

I'm guessing the easiest solution would be to just sew his lips onto Hahn junk. Might as well just do it now for getting Hall of Famer Adam Eaton.
