I think the part of requesting enforcement would be a better place to start, also no building violations have been noted. Just a poorly kept building.

No doubt.

Last time I saw this invoked was a couple of contractors living next to each other whose wives were bad drunks with nothing to do but stare at each other's houses all day. Still, it worked. It's a real community building event.

There are building code violations. I wasn't saying it just because the house isn't kept up. It is literally dangerous. I'm not done doing research yet, but I've noted the following after looking at the local code:

Railing on the front porch has fallen off and the steps going up the porch look rotted and broken.
The gutters and downspouts aren't draining properly, as there are visible leaves and sticks clogging them up. Two of the lower parts of the downspouts are actually detached.
There are bags of garbage sitting on one side of the house. Not sure what is in them, but appears to be garbage.
There is an old aluminum boat on a trailer parked partially in a driveway next to the detached garage and partially in the yard.
The grass was in excess of 1 foot until they came and mowed it.

It's not just "bad" maintenance. There are definitely code violations; I just have to make a comprehensive list.

At least they aren't smoking outside.

Did you really move to CT or is your home in Ford Heights?

 That's why I mentioned the "non-neighborhoods" earlier. There are no subdivisions out here. There are beautiful, upscale properties next to average properties or even properties like this one. It's kind of a hodge podge everywhere out here, and the houses are typically all older. I definitely don't live in a rich area, but it's pretty nice, and this house sticks out like a sore thumb. That's why I'm also amazed no one else has complained.

I was amazed at how many people still have to have heating oil delivered and how others heat their houses with pellets you have to buy at a hardware store.

Yeah, the reliance on heating oil around here is crazy. People pay upwards of $700/month during the winter to heat average-sized homes.

Unfortunately, I'm one of those people. House built in '07, and it is oil heat. I would guess $600/month in the winter. We also have the pellet stove that Rick mentioned. Actually, the pellet stove helps to mitigate the oil bill, and the pellets are relatively cheap if you buy them in bulk, but yeah, it's a pain in general.

Why hasn't the great East Coast figured out a better way to heat homes yet? I guess it fits in with New York City's eternal struggle with garbage.

They were more concerned with the crime and murder problems. They'll get to the garbage and 20th century heating options soon.

Murder, crime and garbage have been intertwined in New York since Lucky Luciano.

Jesus. At 700 a month it'd be cheaper to convert to electric heat. By a lot.

Shit, at that cost per month, sounds like prime geothermal territory to me.

Maybe. Startup is expensive. It can be done obviously... I've worked on one or two but Jesus it's expensive.
I would seriously consider a wood burner or electric if there was no natural gas available. Even propane has to be cheaper and it won't stink like oil man. Oil is... stinky.
