After he washed out with the Cubs, he ended up with a nice long career.

10 years, 2 AS games, washed out?

Actually he became Aramis Ramirez, Kenny Lofton and cash.....so yeah, he was very valuable.

Sox drafted him first in 1999, but couldnt sign him from a 2nd round pick.

He was cannot miss. All he missed was pitch one two and three. Saw him hit a homer or two but he was awful.

Karl Pagel. he was Kris Bryant before Kris Bryant was born. Look at those minor league numbers!

http://www.baseball-reference.com/minor ... gel-001kar

He had one year similar to what Bryant is doing and it was his 4th year in AAA and he was 24

Other than that they are exactly the same.

He dominated every fucking level and was considered the next Babe Ruth.

Come on JORR. He was a 1st round pick, but number 20, not top 5, and he was NEVER considered the next Babe Ruth!

What's cool about this guy (and he was in fact a bust) was the Cubs traded him for one of my all time favorite Cubs, Cliff Johnson. That SOB had some big time power and didn't take any shit. He was an enforcer for Billy Martin on those Yankee teams.

Helluva pinch hitter too!

I don't remember the thoughts on Pagel when he was drafted. Amateurs weren't covered the way they are now. But once he was destroying it in the minors, he was as big as anyone ever was.

Here's my Cliff Johnson story. One of my dad's good friends ran the visitor's clubhouse at Wrigley for years. He told me that Cliff Johnson was a kleptomaniac who stole ten bucks from a batboy's locker. Obviously, he didn't need the sawbuck. He just couldn't help himself. Everyone in there knew he did it too. I think he was a Pirate at the time.

I just looked and he never played for Pittsburgh. He must have been an Astro when it happened. He wasn't quite as well traveled as I thought.

If we looked up all the #4 ranked guys in BA history and then all the 72nd ranked guys, which list would be better do you think?

I would guess the #4s would be better overall, but there probably isn't quite the disparity you seem to think. I know Ian Stewart was ranked #3 or #4 and Torii Hunter was ranked in the 70s. It doesn't really mean a whole lot.

No it really does. You remember that one because it's an anomaly.

I posted the graphs in the other thread (a study on BA's record from 1990-2003) but 1-10 was about 61% success rate. 60-100 is about 26-27% success rate.

With pitchers its an even more pronounced difference

I didn't see any more top 101 rankings before 2007. I did not include 2013 or 2014 as many players are still in the minors. Just me but I'll take the top 10 players. And you'll notice BP recognized with some players they were underrated and subsequently moved to the top 10.

My point is what happens if Theo's Army produces only 2 solid Major Leaguers out of 10 prospects?
What's he going to say? "I'm sorry for burning 3-5 seasons off the charts for 2 guys?"

This whole throwing away entire baseball seasons for a higher draft spot is insane. Because if ,more probably "when" most of these guys don't pan out,the Cubs will be looking at the Free agent market anyway.

Agree 100%. If you could choose the known production of the trio of Carlos Zambrano, Aramis Ramirez and Derrek Lee or the potential production of the current "future five," which would you choose?
