So let me get this straight, you won't even go to the Art Institute without protest?

I will happily go to Andy's Jazz club or dinner at The Chop House without protest. Just about everything else I will protest...unless you are planning a CSFMB event at The Art Institute.

Wonder if this crowd will move south towards the Taste for some closing festivities fun.

UP FOR GRABS: Montrose Beach Hits Riot Stage; Closed By Police Order; Cops Hit With Bottles

blow-up at Montrose Harbor. Image: @StudyInAmor on Twitter.

Nine people were arrested, four police officers were injured and at least one police vehicle was damaged during a riot at Montrose Beach Sunday evening.

The first, somewhat routine, call for assistance came in around 8PM, reporting a man with a gun in the crowd near the boathouse. Once officers arrived, the crowd "blew up," pelting officers with bottles and other objects. Multiple reports of gang activity and threats also emanated from the area.

The Chicago Police helicopter joined most of the 19th district's officers plus officers from the 20th, 18th, 17th, and 16th districts as well as detective and saturation units in restoring peace.

Units from outside of the 19th district were sent back to their normal assignments at 9PM. The lakefront will remain closed all night by police order.

As of 9:15 Sunday night, more than 15 priority calls for police service in the 19th district had stacked up during the melee, waiting for officers to become available

My stance on them is similar - outside of the greater Chicago area, most people have no freakin idea who Wilco is. They're nothing special, really.

But you'd never know that the way the bros and the XRT types treat them.

I'm not really a Wilco hater. I think Tweedy is a great songwriter. But I do think Jay Bennett was a great foil for him. Too bad he ran him out of the band and then killed him. Now he is free to indulge all of his worst instincts with wankers like Nels Cline and Glenn Kotche.

I agree with all of the above, except for the part about Kotche. Nels Cline is the real enemy here. He has made the band exponentially worse since his arrival.

What's wrong with Nels Cline? I love that solo on "Impossible Germany."

My hopes for a big Saturday were dashed by the weather so I had to go with plan B. Sorry.

Nels Cline and Glenn Kotche are like a ring bearer and flower girl at a wedding. All they do is distract people from looking at the bride who is rightfully the center of attention. Tweedy's songs are the motherfucking bride. They don't need no ring bearer and flower girl.

Probably that no one knows who Wilco is outside Chicago or that they're nothing special.

Pretty sure Being There, Summerteeth, and Yankee Hotel Foxtrot were all critically acclaimed well outside the Chicago media. It's not like this band only exists by the grace of Jim DeRogatis. Come on.

As for "WELL THAT'S YOU'RE OPINION!" there, what a copout.

Well the word delusional was employed. Its hard to be delusional about something subjective.

I was referring to Spanky's assertion about Wilco's anonymity.

This is preposterous.

The band has achieved international critical acclaim. It is a significant draw on the festival circuit. And their songs, as CH already mentioned, receive greater airplay on several stations outside of Chicago than they do on XRT.

There's a reason, incidentally, that Wilco holds its summer residency in North Adams, MA. Wilco has a significant following in New England.

http://www.thecurrent.org/playlist

No Wilco on The Current today unless you count "Summer Moon," but what a day they're having:

(Don't Fear) The Reaper - Blue Oyster Cult
I Wanna Love You - Jessica Lea Mayfield
When I Come Around - Green Day
Domino - Van Morrison
Burning Airlines Give You So Much More - Brian Eno
I Love You, Suzanne - Lou Reed
The Jean Genie - David Bowie
Palmcorder Yajna - The Mountain Goats
Paranoid Android - Radiohead
A Sky Full Of Stars - Coldplay
Blitzkrieg Bop - Ramones
Pulaski at Night - Andrew Bird
The Blues Are Still Blue - Belle and Sebastian

I mean, this is how a radio station would sound if I programmed it. It's a joy. Minneapolis is so good at being cool. It's gotta be the weather.

Not just regarding Wilco, but "critical acclaim" hardly ever translates to popularity among the masses.

The average music fan outside of the Midwest probably doesn't know who Wilco is. Hell, they aren't American idol or pop-R&B, so it's not like I'm saying anything crazy really.

I love Cline's over-the-top solos. Kotche's playing is really inventive and always seems to serve the song.

Well now you're conflating two very different groups: music fans, and people who only like American Idol or pop-R&B. I submit that the latter are not music fans. Among people who care about music, usually centered around album/alternative rock, of course those people know Wilco, and probably like them.
