 I guess Cub fans need an announcer to tell them when there's a double play.

Beckham was able to take third base on a ground out to the SS because it was hit to his LEFT. Rocket surgery.

Gillaspie doesn't play with enough fire and passion. Trade him.

Robin should have told him to run hard on the bases. Embarrassing.

That was a hell of a throw. How was Boston not screaming at him to hurry the fuck up?

How Keyser continues to defend Robin is incomprehensible to me.

Robin should do nothing ...that's why you have had bad base running for the past 2 years and it hasn't been corrected...WTF?

Base running drills for major leaguers to run hard. Do they go out for I've cream cones afterwards?

you pull him from the game before the next inning and give him the next few games off?? This is not something you need to teach but it sure as shit is something you need to address afterwards.

Robin totally shouldn't let him play again until at least Friday at the earliest.

The players (clubhouse, dugout) AND manager deserve blame. The Sox have been awful at baserunning for the better part of 3 years now. You don't think part of that is because of the coaching staff and manager?

I actually agree with Keyser that by the time a guy is in the big leagues, it's probably too late for him to learn this stuff. That was another issue addressed in that MLB roundtable on declining offense. During the explosion in power during the 90s, running the bases became far less important and certain skills were neglected. Now the power is largely missing but the skills haven't returned.

But the White Sox baserunning woes have been evident for a long time. I think they go far beyond Robin Ventura. They were atrocious on the bases before he arrived. I watch the Sox everyday though. I'm not sure this is simply a problem for the White Sox or if it is pandemic across all of baseball.

Pretty much. A guy is 22 years old, has been told how great he is his whole life, is now making huge money and fucking whatever hot pussy he wants, I really think expecting him to work Little League drills is unrealistic.

I'm not Ventura fan, but it certainly isn't fair to blame him for the stupidity of Alejandro DeAza.

Same as it ever was

Because it doesnt require physicality and most of us mortals could do it (tag up, take third, pick up coaches) we see it as easy and expect everyone to be good. But they arent.

Like you say, these guys are the best all their lives. Many times they never learn.

Fuck, Billy Hamilton hit a ball last week off the wall that should have been an inside the parker for sure. He had his head turned watching the ball instead of seeing it on the angle and picking up the third base coach.

So once a player is called up why send him back down for "seasoning"?

Another thing they talked about in that roundtable is how with travel ball and the way kids play baseball now, they are never not coached. So they don't learn stuff like that. When guys played pick-up games on sandlots, there were no coaches and they learned how to watch the outfielders and make their own judgments. One of the guys talked about his friend who coaches Princeton and how he makes his team scrimmage without coaches on the bases.
