We did the same thing once.

He would find little backing at home for any type of military strike.

See I don't care that they didn't know Americans were on that plane.
Americans were on that plane. Civilians.
It cannot be unanswered. This is a pivotal point in this conflict... America cannot appear to be impotent on this.

The Russians know already that he is impotent.

Getting into any type of military conflict would be disastrous.

I don't see this as an Obama thing.
This is an America thing.
I'm not thinking that a military conflict would be an appropriate response, at least as far as an invasion/conventional conflict scenario is concerned.
I do believe that sanctions are not appropriate.
I honestly don't know what would be the right thing to do, but the world and to a lesser degree Russia needs to feel the impact of this and understand that this dog don't hunt.

The strange thing is the Ukranian air force use Russian planes. So if they thought they would fire on a Ukranian supply or transport plane they should know. Furthermore, all their (Russian/Ukrainian) planes for those missions are either turboprops (like our C-130 140) or they are "wing over fuselage" jets.

There is no way in the fucking world they mistook a Boeing for a military plane. They are either complete three stooges level people with high tech Russian hardware of something else is going on.

Reality extends beyond the message board.

We could always supply some Chechnyans with weapons to blow up a plane leaving Russia??

That's what I'm getting at. See, the civvies use civvy transponders, they're marked as civilian, they're on civilian flight paths, at civilian altitudes, using civilian radio transmissions... I don't see how one could legitimately mistake this for a military transport.

The idiot factor is always there. Maybe there was someone important on the plane and it hasn't come out yet?

And in any case, those responsible for those crimes domestically are held accountable one way or another.
I'm not really seeing the correlation.

Because the war drums are already beating. You said it yourself that sanctions aren't enough, and that Putin is laughing at us.

After the Newtown massacre, we couldn't even get stricter background checks for gun owners, despite 90% being in favor of it. Nothing was done, other than the same old claptrap from the right about hockey sticks and hammers killing people, too. We should call school shootings terrorist attacks from now on.

Wait,if 90% favor it, why are we blaming "the right"?
Hell even the NRA endorsed background checks.

When the U.S. mistakenly shot down an Iranian airliner in 1988, they incorrectly identified the squawks as military, so it happens.

Wow. Just speed read that wiki page on that incident. Fascinating. Well, then.
Do you feel that this should be regarded as an accident or should a response be issued? Now, I'm feeling rather ambivalent on the issue.
