The conspiracy theorists are having a field day with this, as expected. Having this happen on the anniversary of the TWA800 disaster won't help. Some are going so far as to suggest that the U.S. somehow planted this with the Ukraine to spark more allies against Russia.

Seems like it was just a major fuck-up by the separatists.

Dude, if he changed his plans, some, I'm not saying YOU, would say that the preplanning of routes, and security and coverage and background checks by the Secret Service in preparation of these events were a colossal waste of resources and it was wrong to cancel the events.

No. There was a poll immediately after the shooting that had 70 to 80% of Americans wanting some sort of restrictions. I don't remember exactly what it was but it could have been background checks.

I am having trouble wrapping my mind around the fact that a Russian backed separatist organization, which is largely considered to be composed of Russian special forces with a minority of actual residents of Ukraine, and is well funded and armed by Russia, who downed a plane full of civilians including US citizens should be greeted with nothing more serious than meaningless sanctions.

I usually take polls in the wake of events with a grain of salt. I always say that intellect should always take priority over emotion as well. Take that poll a few months later and the numbers, I suspect, would be different.
That being said, I would really favor the background checks. We need them.
That being said, I really don't think it would make that much of a difference in many of these events.

But its not a U.S. plane. Had it been a U.S. plane, I think the reaction would be different. If the U.S. applies more sanctions or goes to war at this point, I don't think you get enough backing.

The worst part of this is it was an airline of a country that can't do much. Now if that was an Air China plane, you would have a much more interesting impact.

It's called NATO.

Ukraine and half of Eastern Europe have begged for NATO involvement since this started, what, last October or whenever ... but there really wasn't anything you could point to and say "hey, NATO has the legal authority to do this or that" ... after the roll call of passengers comes out (in this day and age how is that not available almost immediately by the way), we'll see if it can be manufactured into enough 'harumph' to get "peacekeepers" brought in by the thousands and from there who knows.

anyway, like I said long ago, Russians are amoral people whose only regulator is an aggressive response...some low level guy is taking the fall for this but it really leads back to the top of the Russian goverment
