Driving on that long stretch of I-88 from the Quad Cities to Naperville. I was stuck behind what I knew was an unmarked cop car on an otherwise empty highway.

The trooper was going the posted speed limit and with no off ramp in sight I couldn't fathom staying at that speed for more than a mile or two. So I pull into the passing lane and gradually pass the car. My girlfriend whom I later married was sitting in the passenger seat and kept insisting that I NOT pass the car. I kept telling her that the unwritten rules of the road allowed me to pass the cop so long as I didn't blow by him.

I make the pass and pull back into the right lane. An instant later the light bar comes on and I'm baffled. Certainly it can't be me he's pulling over. He can't expect me to stay behind him on the highway for God knows how many miles. Except it was me, and left my wallet $85 lighter.

To this day I figure the only reason he pulled me over was because he wanted to get a good look at the moron that would pass a cop on the highway.

Saw the same thing happen to a guy on 53 one Sunday morning. Empty road, he passed the state cop slowly, like at 2 MPH over the limit. As soon as he did the lights came on.

When I lived in Bloomington, I used to drive to Schaumburg a lot to see a chick I was dating. I was in college. Having never resided in Chicagoland at the time (I moved to Chicago later), I just blew past the ipass without paying every time. I later got a $1,300 bill in the mail with all the charges plus late fees.

When I was maybe 19 or 20, I was partying at a friends house and went to drive home. It was winter and my windows had iced up. I was so drunk that I couldn't scrape the windows off, so I drove with my head hanging out the window to see. I only about a mile and a half to get home, all side streets, but still had a cop even saw me I was dead to write.
