I'll do dig the cooler with the 2010 Lakemoorfest Potatoes out of the garage and "accidentally" forget them in his driveway.

Pittsburgh's quietly one of the most mobbed up cities in all of Western Pennsylvania.

j/k.

Did some work for Ladbroke once upon a time. Pittsburgh's mob guys are serious biz. Better off not getting involved with them on either end of the deal.

It is very subtle...

As an outsider, not knowing anything but your fairly detailed story, it seems to me.......

The neighbor is in on it.

What a coincidence that when your neighbor took you over to see the guy, he "wasn't home".
Which is weird because the story started with "Bob, my neighbor across the street, whom I trust completely.......knows a guy who owns his own paving company".

Sorry man.

I don't think the neighbor is in on it. You'd have to be a pretty ballsy dumbass to rip your neighbor off of $500.

Well there are things like permits and material that will be needed and you really can't expect someone to foot the bill for that without getting a commitment from you in the form of a deposit.

Somewhat related, I follow a few groups on Facebook for McHenry county. I've seen a few posts lately that seem to follow the exact same script. Take a deposit, wait a few weeks, claim a death in the family then stop responding altogether.

I'm trying to remember if Lakemoor is McHenry or Lake? I have some contacts with McHenry County and can find out if they are dealing with an increase in these types of scams. Might even be something they are trying to curb. Don't know if that would even help.

It's half mchenry and half lake. I'm on the mchenry side.

Right, but not for sealing a freaking driveway.

Wasn't sealing. It was paving a new drive.

Yep. Eye for an eye in this case. Neighbor gets the same for conspiring with him.

I am intrigued by this. Do you drag him outside and show him all the broken windows- "How do you like that, motherfucker? That picture window if gonna cost you 4 stacks!" and then, when he is a sobbing, apologetic heap of despair, decapitate him? There is for sure some sense of closure in that for Darkside, I suppose.

After leaving a somewhat tense voicemail again today, he called me back.
He said that what happened was that after the rainy season, he had to go to the hospital for a few weeks. He is a diabetic, and had an infection which led to them thinking that he had cancer in his kidneys (they still don't know for sure).
Anyway he says he will be here Wednesday.
I noticed that Wednesday is the first day with rain in the forecast.

IF you are really ready to confront him, what I am done in the past is have someone else call for an estimate, set up a meeting and I get to be the surprise guest of honor.

I deal with this shit everyday, except I dont get shit prices of $1700 and agree to them. Of course if you have a driveway that is about 13 x50, then it is a fair price, assuming he is really repaving it and thus adding 2 inches of asphalt, if just recoating it, you get jobbed buddy.

So what you gonna do? Have the fake meeting? It's awkward, uncomfortable, you need to ask for equipment to keep, personally I almost look forward to them now. It's no longer an issue in my mind, just dirt scum bags who rip people off all the time.

After the recent update Darko what you should have said is bring you 5 $100 bills Wednesday rain or shine and start the bidding process.

It was an attractive nuisance. My son was unable to appreciate the risk posed by that death trap.

Give? never few times taken or get the money back. it's not exactly a "Sit down and lets work it out" type of working environment.

I would never give a guy I dont know cash. At the very least I know other jobs, builders or GC's projects he is working on and no guy wants his problems brought to another project.

And I have done this for a few years and can tell when a guy is a flake as well.

Poor Adam Carolla can't catch a break. First his business parter in the podcast thing splits and sues him for half the podcasting biz.

Then some plucky patent pirate goes after Carolla for infringing some 1990's patent.

Now BigFan might have a copyright infringement suit against Carolla's new TV show:
