He's had similar success in St. Louis and Tampa Bay so it would be 4.0.

As much as Lovie is a great defensive coach, he was maddening at times and I get the angst.

The timeout in the Seahawks game was a fireable offense. He was bad at clock management and made bad decisions on the fly, imo

But the system was good and he got results

OK, I wasnt aware that St Louis was so successful because of their defense. 'The Greatest Show on Turf' was about their amazing defense. How silly of me... And we are giving Lovie credit for the Dungy Tampa teams now? When did that start.....

Lovie is a lot closer to being a great head coach than a bad head coach.

He ran the Rams defense and IIRC they were the best in the NFL. His philosophy worked in every location he has been in. With a little offense it becomes better.

They were good his first season and got worse the next two years until the Bears hired him.

The Rams were very good in 2001 (7th for yards, 3rd for points) but mediocre-to-bad in 2002 and 2003.

Lovie wasn't even one of the three most important defensive coaches on those great Tampa teams. Dungy, Kiffin and Marinelli all played a much bigger role in the team's success than he did as linebackers coach.

A great offense like the rams had made defense much easier...at the end of the first quarter the Rams were up n had opponent forced to throw the ball, just to stay in the game.

I dont know why he was a candidate. The defense was good his first season when they lost the SB, they also had the 1 offense. He was middle of the road the next two seasons.

The Rams were a top defense in 1999 when Harry Carson was the de facto coordinator. After the departure of Carson and Vermeil following the Superbowl victory, the defense was bad--most likely due to Martz's inability to grasp anything related to football outside his narrow offensive system.

Maybe it's just a sad reality that Lovie is Defense Mike Martz. Runs his gimmick system, looks great when you have all stars all over the field, looks terrible when you dont, the league has passed his thinking by, you ignore the other side of the ball to the detriment of the entire team....

They were dead last when he got there.

So that's pretty successful for a D coordinator.

So add that on to the Bears success that were taking away from him.

Thats a lot of LUCK!

All Ive ever read/heard about it includes a lot of credit for Lovie for the performance and creation of the Tampa 2

They were bad for one year prior to Lovie's arrival. Two years before Lovie was hired, they were a top-5 defense and won the Superbowl. The defense was bad following the Superbowl victory because Vermeil and Carson left the team and the players had a letdown.

Who is Martz and who is Lovie?

One guy took over a Super Bowl runner up with Kurt Warner as QB

The other guy took over a 7-9 team with Rex Grossman.

If you replace defense with offense and Martz with Lovie in this sentence, you generally have the strongest criticism of Lovie, in my opinion (except the narrow part).

Thats not quite fair though. Martz took over a team that was loaded on the side of the ball he cared about. Lovie did the same thing.

I dont see the relevance. The NFL is a year to year league. Im not saying he invented defense in STL

And I dont think you can take that precipitous a drop and say it was just a players let down.

I think we are going too far back in history when we start crediting Tampa's success to Lovie. Maybe partially, but hard to have that much influence as a position coach.

The Bears had stars all over the field? When did they happen? Fact is many of the defensive players were mediocre at best.

There wasn't a lot of talent on the team most seasons but somehow Lovie managed to have them in playoff contention.

Dungy was a disciple of Carson, no? Pittsburgh played a version of the Tampa 2 in the 70s. So did a lot of other teams.

Kiffin was the defensive coordinator for Dungy. He and Dungy are typically regarded as the architects of the great Tampa defenses, although Marinelli is generally credited for the outstanding defensive line.

Also, he had Warner for two seasons. He had the immortal Bulger for the rest of his tenure.

Read my post again. I attribute the decline to both a player letdown AND the departure of two key coaches, one of whom (Bud Carson, the de facto defensive coordinator) is widely regarded as one of the greatest defensive minds in the history of the NFL.

No....the Steelers ran it in the 70S....Dungy took it from them.
