I was shocked by how well Allentown played live.

Some of his songs you feel kind of fruity for liking but fuck it, I'm letting my freak flag fly. Give me more Innocent Man.

I was shocked he didnt give a tribute to her.

Seeing Innocent Man live was fucking awesome. Did I snap my fingers in perfect synchronism with Mr Joel?? You're damn right I did... I have no apologies for my love of Billy Joel.

If you don't like Piano Man, you don't like Americuh!

Seriously, it's an iconic song. It may have become as clichéd as Sweet Caroline with the broski crowd but it really is one of our folk type songs, like all those Irish drinking songs that you know by heart.

That's a good point. Itd be nice if we could all just get drunk and sing it and not be cynical but that's not us

I knew Robert Cristigau wouldn't fail me with a good quote:

Billy Joel: Piano Man [Columbia, 1973]
Joel's Cold Spring Harbor was recorded in the vicinity of 38-rpm to fit all the material on--he's one of these eternal teenagers who doesn't know how to shut up. Stubborn little bastard, too--after his bid stiffed, he worked a Los Angeles cocktail lounge soaking up Experience. Here he poses as the Irving Berlin of narcissistic alienation, puffing up and condescending to the fantasies of fans who spend their lives by the stereo feeling sensitive. And just to remind them who's boss, he hits them with a ballad after the manner of Aaron Copland. C

Agreed. I'll also say the only song on that list that I could see people 'hating' is We Didnt Start the Fire... I like it, I know every word, but I can see people being annoyed by it.

Walking down the street
Distant memories
Are buried in the past, forever
I follow the Moskva
Down to Gorky Park
Listening to the wind of change

I picture an 80's-style montage of dolphin's day with Uptown Girl playing ... and then I begin considering trepanation anew.

He is one our our premier disseminators of Schmaltz, and should be cherished and revered as such. He is a geyser of pablum.

I got no beef with Billy Joel. He can write a pop song with the best of them.

I never really thought much about him until I saw him on TV being interviewed one time and he was talking about growing up in New York. He talked about how he and his friends loved betting horses. And then he explained that when you grew up in New York at the time he did, that didn't mean thoroughbred racing. It was all harness. Roosevelt Raceway on a Saturday night!

   Hank and Don Tiny have been bringing the funny hard the last few weeks.

Insanely talented dude, that Billy Joel. JORR is right on about him. That documentary about him and the 9/11 benefit shows was excellent. I liked him even more after that.

No doubt but even at his worst he is an incredibly talented piano player. Compare him to pop acts of the last 40 or so years and you know this guy would have had some success in music had he never sung a note.

I think his problem really came in the mid 80s when he thought he had to do something more to impress supermodels. That results in the doo wop, we didn't start the fire and uptown girl portion of his career. It happens to us guys in competition for super models

The 80s were generally a pretty great time for dolphin and Uptown Girl would be on the soundtrack of the movie about my life

We didnt start the fire was from his last good original album. No doowop stuff on it. Just track after track of good stuff.
