I absolve any doubters of blame. No one could have predicted this kind of production from a guy post steroid era. Any prediction short of AL MVP would have been short sighted.

Boy did he fuck that prediction up

Terry's baseball predictions are usually ridiculous. Like when he thought Prior would win 28 games in 2004. That was before li'l danny realized "wins are meaningless and out of a pitcher's control" or dan was so excited about the "team with no weaknesses" that he didn't even argue with Terry about it.

Latest prediction: Cubs win World Series in 2017. It's a mortal lock.

I recall, back in late 2000, Bores saying Ichiro would be lucky to hit .275 against MLB itching and Berns agreed. How'd that work out?

Nobody in MLB has hit more HR than Jose Abreu, in his first professional season. He spent some time on the DL, let that sink in for a minute.

He may be 27 (by Cuban standards), possibly The most dangerous professional hitter in baseball right now.

Quote:
Jose Abreu has been a revelation in his first season with the Chicago White Sox. The Cuban first baseman entered Sunday leading the major leagues with 30 home runs and appears to be a shoo-in for the American League's Rookie of the Year award.

But as far as his home runs actually go, Chicago's six-year, $68 million man sure hits a lot of cheapies.

Nearly half of Abreu's homers—13 of 30—have barely gotten over the wall, according to Hit Tracker, a website that documents home-run data. That is by far the highest rate since 2006, the first season for which Hit Tracker data is available.

Ryan Howard, who led the league with 48 home runs in 2008, had only nine "just-enough" home runs all season. Additionally, four of Abreu's home runs have been "lucky"—the designation for shots that wouldn't have been home runs on a 70-degree day with calm winds. Among past home-run champs, his luck rate is only rivaled by Miguel Cabrera's six lucky ones out of 44 dingers in 2012.

Image

Meanwhile, only two of Abreu's homers qualified as "no-doubt" home runs, meaning they cleared the fence by at least 20 vertical feet and landed at least 50 feet past the fence. Edwin Encarnacion of the Toronto Blue Jays has 26 home runs this year, and 13 of them were no-doubters.

Incidentally, no one has hit more just-enough homers than Alex Rodriguez did in 2007. Of his major-league-leading 54 homers that season for the Yankees, over a third—19—were of the just-enough variety.

A lot of good players on the list.

I guess when Aaron Rodgers loses home playoff games, its OK because he only loses by a couple of points and doesn't get blown out.

UHhhhhhhhh...

A win is a win whether its 50 points or 2 points.

A home run is a home run whether its clears the fence by 3' or 100'

Its not even that interesting. Having seen Abroo hit HRs to all different fields, its clear that a HRl he hits 410' to center field is going to clear the wall by a lot less than a 380' HR straight down the left field line.

Right, Abreau is so great he knows exactly how hard to hit them so he doesn't waste any distance.

Has their ever been a time when a rookie won Player of the Month but not Rookie of the Month?

Seems like it would be a given.

I'm not going to go that far. He may end up being like Chris Davis. I wouldn't really call that a monster, but he'll certainly earn that money. The thing is, you'd have to be blind to believe he might not hit 30 homers. To me, when you say something so dumb the way Terry did, it calls into question every other thing you've ever said about baseball.

And that leads me into the Ray Williams thing. bernstein is so positive he's right, so authoritative in his opinions, e.g. "this guy couldn't play today", "Lebron is the best ever", but not having any clue who a guy that averaged 20 for the Knicks for several seasons even is shows such a lack of knowledge of the subject matter that his basketball thoughts should never be taken seriously. Now let him drone on about how a pitcher's W/L record doesn't matter. Fuckin' morons.

This is my favorite post, so far today.

The all or nothing declarative statements that BernSTINE hands down (and Terry parrots) aren't coming from some well of wisdom and deep sports knowledge. The more BernSTINE talks on sports the more he shows himself to be an ignorant STAT OF THE DAY!!!!! parrot himself.

His thoughts on the Cubs "rebuilding" process is evidence enough.

And his complete dismissal of the "W" for a pitcher is also evidence of this. He is like the teenage "follower" who reads Marx or Engels and runs around telling everyone that it's the BEST IDEA EVER and simply won't listen to contrary discussion.

I think if Bill James had created a stat called TWTW, he'd buy into it. I will come to Terry's defense a little bit here though -- I've heard him speak up against Bernstein when he gets too far over his skis on blind adherence to stats when discussing a guy. But you are correct in 85% of the scenarios -- much easier for Terry to say Yes than to formulate an opinion and have to defend it against the penguin.

Interesting...

That sold me on Abreu. Not that he was the best in the world, but if someone was willing to say that...he must be pretty decent.

CLEVELAND -- Jose Abreu said after his first All-Star Game that he was moved to tears that night by the national anthem, so much so that he'd like to sing it himself before a White Sox home game. Learning the language will play into Abreu's desire to take on a bigger leadership role, which seems inevitable because of his talent and professionalism and the respect he receives from teammates. The losing -- the Sox fell to 63-79 with a 2-0 loss to the Indians -- doesn't sit well with him, and he already has talked to fellow Cuban Alexei Ramirez about stepping up as leaders.
