This is his second full season. It seems like more, but its not. He played half a season in 12 and last year.
This still doesn't change the point I made.

The same has been said about many one year wonders though. I think Abreu is good...but Rizzo has clearly changed and improved from what he was last year. The fact that you can see it in his approach every at bat is why he won't regress.

Give MLB a full offseason of watching tape on Abreu. Then see next year.
I just don't understand you sometimes. You go absolutely crazy over some minor leaguer but here you are basically saying that MLB is going to catch up to one of the best hitters in all of MLB by watching tape of him.

Of course it does. Your assertion that we "have a history with Rizzo" is misleading if not outright false.

One full season of MLB is not "a history"

You mean the ONE other year where he hit 23 or the half season where he hit 15?

Huh? "Outright false"? Are you saying we don't have a history with Rizzo?

The point is that there is no reason to believe this is a career year for Abreu because it is his only season in MLB. It may be, but he may very well have been this good at the age of 20. We just don't know. That is it. Rizzo is a having a career year by a pretty substantial margin. He may have a career year next year that surpasses this one. I'm not saying he won't.

This is what gets frustrating in these discussions. I respond to IMU who basically says that this is probably Abreu's career year(at least in terms of home runs) and I simply point out that there is no real evidence that this isn't just a normal year for him and it would be highly unlikely that he just so happened to enter MLB at his absolute peak and I basically get the "Don't talk bad about a Cubs player!" treatment.

We have one full MLB season. That's not at all how you presented it. You actually used the words "any other year" as if there was more than one. Did you think he's been around longer than he has?

Hitting 15 homeruns in half a season, then 23 in your first full season is pretty standard for a young power hitter.

It cant really be a career year in year 2. When it's year 2 you're still formulating the profile.

In any other situation in any sport you wouldnt call a guy improving in his second year a "career year"

IMU is clearly not being realistic with his posts on Abreu. Not sure why you keep indulging him.

What are you arguing? All of these points are even more valid for Abreu since he is in year 1.

It's a simple comparison of who is more likely to be in a career year right now. You seem to want to turn it into me saying that Rizzo will never have a better year than this.

I sense Cub fans getting a little of that usual Sox fan angst as we got Abreu to show up and slow the prospect worship.

I dont want you to say anything.

Calling a 24 year old second year player's improvement a "career year" just doesnt make sense.

Because it is accurate. No need to dirty this thread sorry. But I have never seen so much prospect love in this city in my life. It is ok. I would like some of them.

100% agree. 700 for Abroo, 300 for Rizzo.

No, its not. You're applying Dan Bernstein and Barry Rozner to the whole fanbase

Abreu is one of my favorite hitters in the majors, but I hate that he is number 79. Makes him less cool, IMO.

I voted Rizzo, but mostly because I'm a Cubs fan. Without injury, this will be a fun one to track.

As was said or at least alluded to both sides can be happy and hopeful. In reality, we should both be happy of in 15 years they were Knoerko.

Yeah, but the Sox have retired more numbers than anyone but the Yankees. Have to honor all the greats like Ted Lyons and Harold Baines.

Totally disagree. I love when guys pick unique numbers. You'll always remember his number.

If he was 34 or 21 you probably wouldnt.

Did I see Baez in a gif yesterday wearing a 70 number? Is it a new thing?

Well, 4/9th of next year's lineup:
Alcantara
Soler
Bryant
Baez

And 2/5 of the rotation:
Hendricks
Beeler/Wada/Straily

Then adding the bullpen arms:
Ramirez
Vizcaino
Parker
Rivero
Rosscup

There just might be a teensy weensy reason why Cubs fans are paying close attention to the minor league players.

I would remember his number no matter what it was, IMO. I don't mind a non-21, but the seventies are icky.

I also don't remember Emilio Bonifacio's number, and I watch him all the time. I just know I hate it.

It is though, and he isn't a second year player. His official MLB rookie status indicates that he was a rookie in 2012. Calling him a second year player is literally outright false.

Once again though, you seem to want to make this about whether or not Rizzo will have a better year than this. He probably will. Abreu probably will too.

No, its not. It's ridiculous.

A Second full season can not be a career year under any circumstances in any sport because it's representing nearly half of the career. You dont know what the regular is.

I dont know why you keep saying I want to make this about something. Im correcting your "career year" statement because it's wrong. That's it. Nothing more.

Well, I originally said that there was a danger of it being his career year.

However, I'm fine with saying that a player in his third season is having a career year. It doesn't mean he won't have one even better eventually. You disagree.
