They're saying a minimum of 12 months for George.

To answer the question, goaltenders now have those plexiglass throat protectors that hang down from their masks:

Perhaps not foolproof, but we haven't had a Malarchuk in a while -- at least not in net. There was a skater a few years ago who took a blade to the neck and just about died. Richard Zednik, I want to say.

Junior Seau (rip) broke his arm in half when he was with New England. It was just hanging.

Just got a text from Jason Bernstein--he would like to clear up a couple of issues. 1) George surely went into shock (layman's term for you) immediately following such a horrific injury and likely felt no pain, though he will tomorrow. 2) There is no God, so your "prayers" are a waste of time.

Kids have to wear a neck guard. Every once and a while legs get tangled up in sombody's arm and they get nicked or a cut. It always freaks me out.

It all seems moot now but I was ready to pronounce Paul George overrated which I've done previously after watching him play last night. I think he got exposed last yr. If you watched him last night and it is only an exhibition you wouldn't have been that impressed. I'm not talking about from a production standpoint but from a skill standpoint. His ball handling and shooting ability are sub par. I didn't believe that they were serious contenders anyway. I don't wish that injury on anyone though. His career will never be the same. I didn't believe he was capable of carrying a team and the second half of the season was a true reflection of him as a player and Indiana as a team.

The George injury sadly validates Kevin Loves refusal to participate and highlights the idiocy that is the media. Media types have been running around proclaiming that the reason love didn't want to play was not due to the possibility of injury but because he didn't want answer questions about a possible trade to Cleveland. This was primarily ESPN writers. They stated that there was a minimal risk of injury. I am always interested in how non athletes can profess to be experts on athletic undertakings. Anytime you participate in anything athletic there is a risk of injury. I know guys who have blown out knees just from starting and stopping. The irony and hypocrisy will be next week this same group will be questioning why players would want to play in this event. You can book that one

I bet they wish they could change that. Larry Bird will retire in a month. He hates being around losing.

At least he got his $90m contract extension. I'm amazed teams allow players to do these things when so much money is invested in them.

Love of the game clause is in every contract. If not they couldn't even scrimmage during the summer.

Its also the reason that owners shortened the length on long term deals. In the last collective bargaining deal that was one of the primary issues. The days of the 7 and 8 yr contracts are over because the money is guaranteed. There were a lot of owners stuck with bad contracts because guys were hurt not playing or after returning from injury were never the same player. They were paid to be franchise players but in some cases werent in the rotation.

Football does it right with contracts (for obvious reasons regarding injuries.) The thing is in the other 3 major sports, injuries also are a big issue. The fact that in baseball,a pitcher signs a 8 year 11 mil per season contract and blows out his arm in year 1 but still gets paid is pure bs.

What needs to be remembered is a Derrick Rose turnover made the Bulls road to the playoffs a little easier.
