Friday

The weather was absolutely glorious as we arrived at the Soldier Field south lots at 3:00. The only problem was, they weren't opening the south lots, where all the action was last year. Instead, they funneled everybody into the Waldron Deck across the street. They also charged $49 per car to park (free after 5:00 PM), despite the emails from livenation stating that the parking was $40, and only $30 last year. My buddy's girlfriend spent a good hour bitching about the price change (which was some bait and switch bullshit), and the fact that we had to park in a different lot than last year. She was actually pulling up the email on her phone, and trying to show the security/lot attendants. I told her that they don't care. Their job is to do what their bosses say, not listen to the concert goers. I didn't see the big deal about being in a different lot. The same people that would be in the south lot, were now in this lot. Whatever.

We were the first car through the gates, and we made our way to the top deck, where I noticed that there were no Port-o-Johns, because they were across the street, in a lot that was to remain closed. For the first ninety minutes or so, there were only a few dozen cars in the lot. We got down to drinking some heady beers immediately with our neighbors. We were trying to be friendly with security (that never hurts), and I was giving them some free cold waters, as they walked the lot. Not all of the security guards, just the big shots in the black shirts, with guns and handcuffs.

There was a forklift bringing Port-o-Johns to our lot, two at a time. People were paid to set up the Johns in the other lot, and then got paid again to bring them across the street. When we returned to our cars after the show, the Johns were gone, only to be set up again the next day. No wonder the city is broke, but that's another story for another day.

The lot started to fill rather quickly at 5:00, and we were positioned so that all cars rolling in had to drive past us, and my coolers stocked with PBRs and waters for sale. I cut out the side of the 30 pack, and held it in the air, to alert people of my beers available for sale. It worked, because the beers were really moving at $2 each, or 3 for $5. The waters weren't big movers like last year, when it was 100 degrees. It worked too well, however. Just before we were getting ready to pack up, and head into the show, three of the security walked up to me, and said that they have been watching me sell beers for two hours, and it was time to put them away. Yes, sir.

While the Friday show was good, I thought it paled in comparison to the other two shows. Phish shows are like pizza and blow jobs. Some are better than others, but there are no bad ones.

Nothing wrong with being up front. Been there, done that. I had floor access all weekend, but didn't go down there once. My old ass hangs out in the back of the lawn, near the beer tents.

Wedge from Night III was awesome.

That jam was sick. They have never used The Wedge as that type of vehicle before. Chus approves.

Good weekend, and no rain!

Unbelievable. Complete opposite from last year.

The songs from the new album don't seem nearly as jarring and out of place as some of the Joy stuff did at first (aside from Winterqueen destroying Down With Disease).

Usually, it takes me a while to feel the new albums. I like every track on this one. Best album since Story of the Ghost.

Ghost > Weekapaug was a lot of fun.

Ghost is always huge, and when Mike hits those first notes on Weekapaug, the place explodes.

We will have to meet up next year. We could have had four CSFMB'ers at one spot. You, Donspiracy, myself, and a soon to be outed noob, who had a blast.

She was fucked up. A bunch of creepy weirdos were trying taking pictures of her. She walked over to me, and started talking to me. For two minutes, she was talking directly into my ear, and I have no idea what she said. She had nice nipples, though.

I always pegged Walt Williams Neck as more a Widespread Panic type of guy.

So I saw a most excellent rock show Saturday night. The band was Phish.

I went to the show with very little exposure to the band’s catalog. Listened to a studio record years ago and heard some live songs, but that was about it. I was very well aware of the “jam band” label and the polarizing aspect of the band.

I liked a few Grateful Dead records in college and may investigate more of their catalog down the road, but seeing the GD live was just not my thing. Saw them around 1990 and did not dig the noodling bullshit and the only thing worse was some of the ardent fans’ shenanigans – the body stink, the patchouli, the attempted mooching of beer, food, weed, etc. and the “I need a miracle” BS.

Then there was the Dave Matthews Band. I gave them a shot, I really did. Friends/fans would tell me how much I would like seeing them live because of the musicianship. I get that and all, I mean I’m a RUSH fan, but, outside of a few original songs and covers, the tunes did nothing for me and the live versions were so much worse. Pass.

Now, I absolutely love Medeski, Martin & Wood and very much enjoyed seeing Leftover Salmon at Horde Fest in 1997, but I know nothing about Widespread Panic, Moe, Umphrey’s McGee . I like any music that emotionally connects with me. If I like the music, I don’t care what genre it is or the back-story of the music. I like what I like.

First, I forgot how much I enjoyed tailgating. What a great time! Outside of seeing RUSH once a tour, I don’t go to large shows anymore – really just small venues in the city. Perfect weather, relative freedom to do whatever you want because security wore bright red shirts and moved really slow around the lot. Plus, Chussy’s crew was very hospitable. In retrospect, riding a bicycle to the lot/show is the way to go.

The songs were strong and the groove was long. I never once felt I was a seeing a “jam” band. These guys were rocking the fuck out and feeding off each other in a way I really enjoyed. The soundsystem and video screens were first rate too. I suspect they were upgraded when they expanded the seating. Seeing them from the lawn was the perfect setting – I’m not riveted on the musicians on stage, ease of access to toilet/beer, ability to converse and people-watch. Just an absolute blast of a time.

Other than waking up a few stops past mine on the Blue Line, the night was perfect. I was quickly brought back to earth the next day when I was chatting up a girl at the coffee shop. Everything was going well until I mentioned the name of the band I saw the night before. The look of abject horror on her face was priceless. I laughed. Hard. I mean, I’m a RUSH fan, I’m used to that.

That sounds pretty awesome. How often do they do the jumping back into a song?

Not that often. They kept going back to Moby Dick in 2000 at Deer Creek.

07/11/00 (Tue) Deer Creek Music Center - Noblesville, IN
Set 1: Ya Mar (1), Moma Dance, Uncle Pen, Drowned > Chalk Dust Torture Prelude (2) > Chalk Dust Torture, Theme from the Bottom, Cavern

Set 2: Also Sprach Zarathustra > Down with Disease > Moby Dick > Down with Disease > Runaway Jim > Moby Dick, Back on the Train > Moby Dick > Back on the Train, Harry Hood (3) > Moby Dick, Hold Your Head Up > Terrapin (4) > Hold Your Head Up > Moby Dick (5) > Hold Your Head Up, Character Zero, E: First Tube > Moby Dick > Chalk Dust Prelude/Reprise (6)

Comment: (1) with Trey on keyboards
(2) "Drowned" jam, with the words "Chalk Dust Torture" (not the song) sung over it
(3) with glowsticks, and "Moby Dick" jam during the intro
(4) Jon introduced as "star of the film Gladiator, Russell Crowe"
with vacuum solo and Jon introducing the entire band and a small cactus being put on stage and placed by Mike's amp, Trey introduces Chris Kuroda
(5) Trey drum solo and Jon vacuum solo during
(6) Trey hopes everyone who is camping has a good time, announced that "We are the Phish from Vermont" and suggested that if people missed anything that they "read the book or see the movie"

The real story last night was the bust outs. Catapult, Jennifer Dances, and I Been Around haven't been played in a long time.
