Larry does it out of pride in his jock-sniffing familiarity with the subjects, which is much less offensive than bernstein's attempt at infantilizing Rose by refusing to call him anything but "Derrick".

But referring to NBA superstars by first names or nicknames is pretty standard. No one talks about James going back to Cleveland, which is funny, because that does sound like a first name.

I think at some point a guy becomes so famous and has a first name unique enough that using it no longer echoes back to the era of slaves being called simply "Toby" or "Joe". I have no issue with the usage of LeBron or even Carmelo/Melo. "Derrick" doesn't quite fit that bill.

Yeah, well, I'm really cognizant of it from growing up in Evanston where you had a bunch of proud working class black men- I guess guys kids today might refer to as "old heads"- and you learned right away to call them "Mister __________". Not that I would have called a white adult by his or her first name, but I understood that doing so wasn't weighted with the same type of baggage that calling a black person would be. And even when I became an adult myself it would never have occurred to me to call those guys anything but Mister.

And with regard to Rose, I guess I would say that the context in which bernstein is constantly discussing him matters. He calls him " a child". He stops just short of using racial epithets to describe his brother and his agent. It's quite a bit different than a fan excitedly yelling "DERRICK!!!!!" when Rose wins a game with a three at the buzzer.

Well, yeah, the fact that he treats him like a child when not explicitly calling him a child is far more troubling than the NBA convention of given names for stars.

I think I started noticing the creepy paternalism about two years ago and other than our board, this has gone remarkably un-called out.

EDIT: 4/30/12. Plus ça change...

Is anyone else slightly creeped out about their discussing "Derrick?" I can't identify exactly why but it strikes me as weird.

Like I had said a while ago, it's commonplace to be on a first-name basis with elite or hometown NBA players. However, the greater Derrick Rose narrative as recently codified in Leitch's GQ piece, wherein Derrick Rose is Chicago's very own pwecious widdle Pooh who has to be sheltered from the Big Scary World Out There so he can continue to entertain us by putting a ball in a ring, is starting to strike me as icky and paternalistic and just a little bit perverse. Sure, maybe this held water in his rookie year when he didn't know what food was and actually had to be taught how to slice an apple without committing Japanese ritual suicide, but it can't go on anymore. He's not this idiot-savant foster child of Bulls fandom and Chicago at large anymore. It's been four years. He's 23. Let's not drag this playground manchild thing out anymore.

Danny talking about how important Manny was to teaching Baez the mental side of the game. I thought Dan wasn't big into the mental side of things and that stuff is overblown?

If a caller had made that point, Bernstein would say it's impossible to measure, etc.

I'm sure he has a source saying that Manny was the best mentor that the Cubs could have hired.

the Brady Bunch episode where Greg wants to be grown up and starts calling the folks Mike and Carol was pretty jarring

Well Dan, since you predicted (and it's in my thread) that the Cubs would be playoff contenders by 2016, we sure should be.

When Dan was asked by Kris Bryant wasn't being called up about 2 weeks ago, he doesn't question the decision at all, sort of laughed at the caller before falling in line with the thought that it's stupid to bring him up right now.

Something tells me that this will be the latest in decisions that we're not allowed to question or wonder about because the Cubs have been very clear on the plan.

to be fair, Baez is on the 40 and Bryant is not, no?

That is a fair point, but I don't think it would be difficult decision to find a way to add Bryant to the 40 man roster.

I'd say his influence was minimal.

And he did his typical BernSTINE douche stuff, as well. Because OF COURSE during the interview with Mr. REALLY SMART Baseball Insider Guy BernSTINE goes "well, I didn't hear you bring up the name Manny Ramirez....." like BernSTINE had the inside track on ANY of this stuff and he was just dropping super THEO baseball smarts on this guy. Like Theo is so smart (and Jewish so BernSTINE is also smart by extension) that he knew to get Manny R. to help Baez mentally and character wise...even though in the recent past he mocked the Manny signing and mocks anyone who says anything about those things meaning anything.

And BernSTINE having a "source" is a lie, he has a Cubs PR guy that did a wedding through his wife and gets fed the company line.

bernstein has to slay every sports legend that he's been around. coach K is his collegiate demon to exorcise, and he made a name for himself tearing apart m-jeff back in the day.

I'll bet Coach K thought twice before ever berating some teenage journalists again.
