The Cubs got a bit more for Garza than Olt.

Namely, the next Adam Wainwright and Pedro Martinez.

Daytona Cubs ‏@daytonacubs 4m

@billy_mckinney does it again! A 2-out 2-run single puts the #Cubs up 3-1 in the 8th. McKinney is 5-7 w/ 15 RBIs w bases loaded (25 total)!

If it is an intelligent thought, I meant it. If it is dumb...joke.

Let's go with that. :)

Keeps that up and there could be a pitcher on the way from some team that thinks they're smart.

Or maybe he's ready to contribute

Best Tools from the Southern League, as voted on by SL managers. Kris Bryant shows up a few times

Bryant with another bomb. Makes Baez's numbers from last year look like child's play.

A couple excerpts:

Bill McKinney is beginning to look like an absolute steal. 2 more hits and 2 more walks left him at .340/.439/.470 since joining Daytona. He has a .360 OBP and 11 HRs between the two levels this year.

Jorge Soler went 2 for 3, hitting his 5th HR, a double, 2 walks, 3 RBI, and 3 runs scored. He was only retired in his last AB, which was a strikeout. It has been a remarkable season for the RF'er who is still just 22 years old and on the doorstep of the major leagues. He has 10 walks vs. 11 Ks at the AAA level. It's really hard to make sense of Soler's numbers as he has had just 165 PAs in 46 games, most of which have come at the AA and AAA levels. His total numbers? .377/.473/.783 with 12 HRs, Wow, just wow. At Iowa he is hitting .313/.431/.750. Not too shabby either. Including the playoffs he can still accumulate another 100+ PAs and approach 300 for the year and my guess is they will let him do that, but unlike Bryant, it doesn't cost the Cubs anything but a 25 man roster spot to call him up.

Dan Straily's combined stats over his past 3 starts:
19IP 12H 2R 0ER 4BB 18SO

ERA has dropped from 4.99 to 3.00.

McKinney is batting over .300 in High-A and Russell is at .300 or around.

Ya gotta hope someone out of Straily/Turner/Doubront will become a nice 4th/5th starter. Maybe next year 1 or 2 pitch out of their minds like Hammel/Maholm/Feldman and you flip the guy if it's unsustainable since you can't have a rotation of 4th and 5th starters.

A couple more excerpts

Albert Almora went 1 for 8 and scored a run but more importantly left late in the 2nd game holding his hamstring. Hopefully it's cramps but given his hamstring issues in the past, there is reason for concern.

Mike Olt went 2 for 5 wth a double, RBI, and 2 runs scored. He probably should have been 2 for 4 with a walk had it not been for another ump show, but even without that it's remarkable to see Olt's turnaround in AAA after being overmatched at the major league level. He really hadn't hit at the AAA level either until now, so maybe Olt is turning a corner. He is another player I am looking forward to seeing in a Cubs uniform to end the year.

Almora is really starting to piss me off.
Olt will have his revenge on the doubters

Bleacher Nation wrote the other day his BABIP is like .400. But, hey, you'll never be able to have a high BABIP if you always strikeout.

I dont think those are guys you flip. Those guys can all be good starters. If they find a groove, I dont think it will be unsustainable

Well, next year there is a full boat of 4th & 5th starting candidates:
Wood
Hendricks (so far so good)
Straily
Turner
Doubront
Jokisch

You hope one of them could possibly elevate to a 3 but none of them have great raw stuff other than Turner. They're all soft tossers with high 80s low 90s fastballs. You do need more than 5 starters to get through 162 so I see Theo's strategy and of course all these guys becoming anything isn't guaranteed.

Man, I really hope Travis Wood is better than a 4 or 5. Really looked like he found something the last couple years

Turner touches 93 pretty regularly. He can be good

But yeah, you need a ton of arms

Last year appeared to be more of an anomaly than what we should expect.

Last year when he 3.11 ERA he had a xFIP of 4.50.
This year with his 4.86 ERA he has a 4.51 xFIP.

The biggest difference I see was last year he had a strand rate of 77.4% and this year of 66.6%. So say he gets to league average of 70% and we see a 4ERA?

I think we'll see the strand rate drop as he's sporting a 3.95 BB/9 versus last year's 2.97 BB/9 so he's gone from above average to below. Plus his BABIP is .321 versus last year's .248. I think we can safely assume his BB rate and BABIP will drop next year so we'll have a solid 4 instead of a crappy 5. Maybe we see another flash in the pan 3 season but I wouldn't bet on it.

If he had enough plate appearances to qualify, Jorge Soler would lead the minors in OPS. Since he doesn't, it's Kris Bryant.

Ben Badler sounds like a name we could have some fun with on this board...like that guy who worked for the Fire a few years back
