Craig Ferguson is stepping down as host of CBS’ “Late Late Show.” He will sign off in December.

Ferguson broke the news this afternoon to his studio audience during the taping of the show.

“During his 10 years as host, Craig has elevated CBS to new creative and competitive heights at 12:30,” said Nina Tassler, Chairman, CBS Entertainment. “He infused the broadcast with tremendous energy, unique comedy, insightful interviews and some of the most heartfelt monologues seen on television.”

Added Tassler, “Craig's versatile talents as a writer, producer, actor and comedian speak to his great days ahead. While we'll miss Craig and can't thank him enough for his contributions to both the show and the Network, we respect his decision to move on, and we look forward to celebrating his final broadcasts during the next eight months.”

Said Ferguson, “CBS and I are not getting divorced, we are ‘consciously uncoupling,’ but we will still spend holidays together and share custody of the fake horse and robot skeleton, both of whom we love very much.”

Ferguson has several projects in the works, including hosting “Celebrity Name Game,” a syndicated game show beginning fall 2014, as well as developing television projects via his Green Mountain West production company.

The show earned a Peabody Award in 2009, and an Emmy Award nomination for the host in 2006.

Peter Lassally is executive producer of “The Late Late Show”; Michael Naidus is producer.

Most underrated of the late night guys. Back when I lived in the central time zone or before I had kids, I'd watch his monologue every night before I went to bed.

Heard the 90 minute thing a few times in various places prior to Letterman even announcing his retirement, a throwback to when Carson used to do 90 minutes and a pack of smokes a night.

90 minutes would be pretty easy for Colbert to fill. Guests get more time, standups do their routine + interview, maybe a musical guest plays twice. Although the latter's a cheap fill. If they incorporated other comedians into the show the way the Daily Show does, not a stretch for Colbert to fill 120 minutes.

Wonder if CC will collapse Colbert's 30 minutes into Stewart's Daily Show. Stewart already has to push content to web only due to time constraints.

No idea why she's popular.

the nerdist guy, Chris Hardwick, maybe they'll run him after Colbert. But the drive to 90 minutes or even 2 hours for 1 one show is to cut costs as TV's audience disappears. hardwick's @midnight format is probably fairly cheap, as they rely on comedians to riff on topics rather than a lot of pre-written content.

I think Les Moonves wants the Jon Daily Show to stay a 1/2 hour, so it could remain a lead-in for Colbert. Albeit they'll be on different stations. I assume they'll fill in the time w/ Tosh.0 replays or come up w/ a show "@11:30".

Btw I think Fallon's show is excellent. It's the only late night show I can watch.

They'll go w/ a minority guy. Whichever of the Kings of Comedy that's not hosting a game show.

I'm glad he's going before he gets too stale. Ten years is a good run.

Didn't Ferguson marry an East Coast heiress a few years ago? Probably doesn't need to work anymore. He can do sporadic stand-up at casinos, movie cameos and guest spots on tv shows and spend the rest of his time on holiday with his heiress.

Craig Ferguson is the goods. I've been a late to the party watcher of his show, it's too bad he's going on to other things.

I'll miss him, and Geoffrey Peterson.
:(
Seth Meyers show isn't making much of an impression on me, which is sad, because I like him.
The show just isn't very good, especially when Armisen isn't there.
I'll give the new English guy a shot though, anyone see the painfully awkward back and forth
between him and Sir Patrick Stewart from 4 years ago>

I'd like to spin something else around and into Kate Mara's head.
Alas and alack, I'm married.
And nowhere close to her league.

I'll definitely miss Ferguson. I don't get to catch him much, but he never disappoints. It would be nice to see some place like TBS makes a run at him. He would be perfect in the much failed after Conan slot at 11:00.

The show that was on after Lopez was cancelled a second time, has also been cancelled.

Ferguson already has a lame sounding type of game show lined up.
And BTW, I, for one, thought the Pete Holmes Show was absolute gold.
Now wash mah damn towels.
