The Gourds are a great Texas roots band. Their best work is a CD called Buttermilk & Rifles; I consider it to be an alt-country/neo-roots masterpiece. The CD is nominally a solo project by one of the Gourds singers, Kevin Russell, but all of the band members contribute to it and the band performs songs from it live.

Their bluegrass cover of Gin and Juice is brilliant and hilarious. I believe Phish's cover (and those of other bands, too, as the Gourds' cover caused quite a sensation in some circles) may take its inspiration from the Gourds' effort. I could, however, be wrong about this last part.

i know who you're talking about, and was introduced to the version back in 98 by a guy who was, incidentally, a phish fan.

never been a big fan of the "hey let's take a rap song and turn it into a country song because we're white and it'll sound funny" but this one was really well done. and actually, sounded like its own song.

I know who they are Midge. I was just cracking wise on a pet peeve of mine, mis-labeled songs on P2P networks. I've had to get into numerous arguments about this song, as it's been listed as all the bands I rattled off, and I often futilely and vehemently explain that it's The Gourds. Didn't mean to make you write all that in vain. My apologies, kind sir.

Whoops, I guess I'm out of the loop. I didn't know the band was at once so widely known and uniformly misidentified. Most people I talk to aren't aware of their work, which is a shame in my opinion. Kevin Russell is a really talented songwriter and the other guy is fun, too.
