Listening to the new Gaslight Anthem.
First impression: it's a good logical evolution from handwritten - less polished, more raw.

My bad.

You into the 90's Chicago scene at all?

I was a minor part of it.

Expound please. What bands from then do you love? I think you might be my new best friend.

Handwritten was damn fine IMHO not original but really damn good.

I agree, I thought "The '59 Sound" was better. My first impression of "Get Hurt' is that it is pretty good. I'll give it another listen tomorrow when I'm at work, but I've already in on the presale.

ETA: in reply to Lawyer.......

I was in a couple unsigned bands from around 93 to 99 that played Metro a bunch of times, Lounge Ax, Thurstons, Empty Bottle, etc.
We were friends with a band called Certain Distant Suns, they eventually got signed to Giant, so we played with them a bunch.
We had fairly good turnouts for our shows, played in studio at Q101 and WCBR.
The earlier band (Stranger Things) recorded a demo with Dave Trumfio, and the 2nd band Intro To Physics recorded with Mark Rubel,
who produced HUM's Downward Is Heavenward. Nothing ever really became of it. Our singer/guitar player in ST got so drunk at our
last show at Metro that he couldn't even keep his guitar from falling from the strap. After the "show" HE fucked up, he decided that "WE" sucked and the
band was over. ITP only lased for about the last 6 months of 99, but we played at Metro, Bottle, and we had a show at Lounge Ax in December of 99,
but my dad had just died the week earlier and I couldn't proceed with the band anymore. Seems like a lifetime ago.
Anyway, fave Illinois bands are the requisite SP, UO, Fig Dish, Local H, Veruca Salt, HUM (#1), Red Red Meat, others that escape me at the moment.

Oddly that sounds like Hum breaking up lol. We likely crossed paths at one point. You ever listen to cap'n jazz?

Geez I hadn't heard of that band in years. Way back when, my ex-wifes friend was a big groupie for those guys.
I never went to a show but she couldn't stop talking about them.

Listened at the gym this morning. I dig it. Anyone else going to see them on 9/16?

No Lawyer, never got into Cap'n Jazz. Emo really isn't my thing.
But in all my gushing over HUM, I can't believe I forgot my all time favorite Cham-bana band.
TITANIC LOVE AFFAIR.

Jay Bennett! Now we're talking!

What about the Poster Children and the Vertebrats?

In all seriousness, Jay was by far my favorite guitar player of that era,
and I was devastated when he died. He could DO IT ALL.
I've actually never heard of The Vertebrats, but I totally dig Poster Children.
I've got 4 of their records, with Junior Citizen being my favorite.
The self-titled Menthol album is really great too.

Downward Is Heavenward and Electra 2000 are EVERY bit as good as YPAA.
Electra 2000 is rawer and heavier, and Downward just has this massive sound.
Great songs don't hurt either.
I've never gotten my hands on their debut, Fillet Show. (Get it )
HUM should've been as huge as Smashing Pumpkins.

I fucking love that Menthol record!

"Stress Is Best" could be my theme song:

Bankrupt again,
and I lost all my
hard earned
Yankee dollars
on gaming dens
in cellars
And party girl
Polaroids
are all I have
to show and sell
Shame rides shotgun,
Yeah, look who brought one.

There was another band that played around when I was down there called the Outnumbered. The main guy was a DJ on WPGU. I can't think of the guy's name. I think it's something Italian. Anyway, he later played in Pansy Division.

You didn't ask me, but Analphabetology has a few good cuts on it. I don't think it's something I liked as much as I wanted to like it.

Title track on on downward is fantastic but ypaa was their best work IMHO. That's ignoring stars. Which was obviously a hit. The Pod was great. Suicide Machine and I Hate It Too are perfect.

I put out some of the early capn'jazz. The kinsellas were talented. Still are honestly. That was their complete works what did you like?

That's fair. The Pod as actually probably my favorite HUM song. I used to belong to another board and that was my user name, and people always gave me shit for liking that "Christian rap-metal band".
The bookends of Electra 2000 are monsters. Iron Clad Lou and winder. Check it out if you haven't already.

I love the outro in Hum's Green to Me.

I remember seeing "Intro to Physics" in Reader ads back in the day.

Certain Distant Suns was a pretty big deal to me and my friends as we all knew (or knew of) Justin Mroz given they were from Fox Lake.

Ok I am a hardcore hum fan. I bought a reverse dilly pedal just to be able to play The Pod. I warm up playing guitar in drop d by playing I Hate it Too.
