i've accepted the fact that tony's days as a top-shelf racer are over as it's 99% likely that the recent/ish chase with "brother carl" edwards (arguably the greatest chase in nascar's history, seeing as carl wasn't exactly chopped liver finishing like 2nd 4th 4th 2nd 3rd 2nd or whatever, but tony went and reeled off 3-4 wins during the chase and he was finishing perennially top-5 to edge carl out in a fit of two drivers going all out for the sprint cup and yet somehow tony stewart pulled it off, essentially bookending jimmie johnson's run of, what, ~5 consecutive titles?

and now there's only one more person out there, jeff gordon, who really has a shot to end up joining tony as the only drivers to win under the original format and the chase format. jimmie johnson = total chase babby (baby. it's a meme thing). smoke stewart, when he actually gave 1/2 of a shit, was a formidable racer who's won the indy 500, the brickyard, and uhhhh i dont think he's won at daytona right? he owns the 2nd mid-season race there.... but never quite the first one. maybe he'll end up like an old past-his-prime dale sr. and rattle off a daytona like its a big fucking deal cuz honestly i think that daytona win is the only big one that's eluded him through his very good/solid nascar career (which means that eventually he goes into the nascar HOF because if they'll induct any crew member who's handy with a socket wrench, call it a hunch they can't wait to bend over backwards and induct contemporary/ish drivers who rattled off a few titles during a ~15-20+ yr career and yeah. now he runs over children? jailtime?

well hey at least he won't go out and finish 17th like it's literally the place to be. i doubt he's even in the chase this year cuz i dont think he's won anything nad theres no way he's there on points. i think he's just gonna transition to the owner side and occasionally race when e's got hte itch but that's prolly a few more years off as proud waning nascar drivers stick around past their expiration date and hey you never know.... i mean look at jeff gordon, all of a sudden this year he's putting it together and in/around that pole position heading into the chase so this is his chance to join tony as the only drivers to win in standard/chase formats and since this is the 2nd time i mentioned it can you tell that it's something i've really been hoping that he gets to keep to himself? once gordon goes to pasture, assuming they dont decide to embrace the oldschool and cater to the hardcore base as opposed to turning NASCAR into a national pastime (cuz that pre-race prayer is going to catch on bigtime. except in the NBA they'd prolly have to do special muslim prayers too and well i just cant see the nascar IRL demographic all ready to have some time to pray to allah..... plus shit who hasnt hung out in the bleachers of a cubs game and walked around the back (to see if you could sneak a smoke no less. not worth the effort.... but you DID notice some hardcore str8up muslim dudes busting out little rugs and wooden steps so they could pray right there on the spot in the middle of the game (and they gotta be handy with a compass cuz you gotta face due southwest to be facing in the direction of mecca. duh)

SCAR Sprint Cup champion Tony Stewart struck a driver who later died after a dirt-track racing incident Saturday night at Canandaigua (N.Y.) Motorsports Park.

According to reports and video of the crash, Stewart's car allegedly struck driver Kevin Ward Jr., who had exited his sprint car after a collision and stepped toward Stewart's car. The mishap occurred at about 10 p.m. ET at the half-mile dirt track north of Syracuse.


The Ontario County Sheriff's Department did not identify the driver, who was pronounced dead on arrival at a local hospital. Stewart cooperated with authorities and was released. Officers were conducting an investigation at the track early Sunday morning.

Tyler Graves, a fellow racer and friend of Ward, told The Sporting News that he watching the action from the grandstands.

"Tony pinched him into the frontstretch wall, a racing thing," said Graves, 16, of Bolivar, N.Y. "The right rear tire went down, he spun on the exit of (Turn) 2. They threw the caution and everything was toned down. Kevin got out of his car. ... He was throwing his arms up all over the place at Tony for most of the corner.

"I know Tony could see him. I know how you can see out of these cars. When Tony got close to him, he hit the throttle. When you hit a throttle on a sprint car, the car sets sideways. It set sideways, the right rear tire hit Kevin, Kevin was sucked underneath and was stuck under it for a second or two and then it threw him about 50 yards."

Graves said Ward was not moving after he hit the ground.


Another witness, Adam Dulski, told USA Today, "It happened in Turn 2. The prior lap, Tony had gotten into him -- just spun him, nothing big, just spun him around. The caution came out. He hopped out of the car -- the driver of the 13. He hopped out to go and yell and point a finger at Tony, typical thing.

"Tony came around, the back end slid out and he definitely caught him -- I couldn't tell if it was with the front or the back of the car. The body made contact with the car and went sliding across the track. It was the worst thing I've ever seen."

Barbara Manning, a nursing supervisor at Thompson Health in Canandaigua, said earlier that a man was at the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

"You never mean to do something like that," Graves told TSN. "Kevin was pissed and he let Tony know. And Tony was trying to give the message back that he wasn't happy either. He went over the line with it."

After the accident, the track cancelled the rest of the program.

"Tonight's racing events were suspended due to an accident," the track announced on Facebook. "Please hold off on any speculation until we have further information to share."

It then added, "Canandaigua Motorspots Park will not have an official statement on the accident that happened in the ESS race until tomorrow. Please pray for the entire racing community of fans, drivers, and families. Please be respectful in any comments."

Last July, Stewart was involved in another wreck at the same track that resulted in two drivers suffering injuries.

Stewart is scheduled to drive in the NASCAR Sprint Cup race on Sunday on the road course at Watkins Glen, N.Y.

Kinda, yeah. He should have opted for the helmet throw, but NASCAR tends to glorify the hotheadedness of their drivers.

This was my thought. I've seen guys do it before, but not quite like that. In fact, I think Stewart is one of the main guys who does shit like that.

I have no idea what Stewart's intentions were. I'm reading spanky's posts about how he moved his back end and revved his engine and I don't really see that. I don't know enough about racing though. I'll take spanky's word for it. I guess I do know a little about Stewart's reputation for being an asswipe, but that's a long way from purposely running over a guy. I think to someone who just watches that video without knowing any backstory, you'd have to believe the guy that got run over was some kind of fucking wacko running onto the middle of the racetrack.
