Thanks Z. I've never really been wrong, so that makes sense.

Can't quantify it like Bernstien. Pretty common though.

I feel sorry for his family, but Robin Williams is overrated. Clap-clap-clappety-clap.

Being hyper on stage doesn't make one funny. Having good material does.

Yeah he was good in One Hour Photo. Gary Cole was the Wal-Mart (ish) manager. Garp, Fisher King. The guy was a bona fide star. Too bad.

My point is you don't "read stories" about people not in the entertainment industry. So you wouldn't know or care. Lots of people are insecure about themselves. Most regular people don't even get diagnosed with depression cuz they don't seek help for a variety of reasons.

So yeah, you hear about the celebrities. I'm just saying it's the same percentage of all people. And it's because of the fact that you hear and read about their problems that is why everybody says they suffer from it at a greater percentage. But that's not true.

Didn't Irving adapt all of his own novels though? I saw an ad for a band called the Ellen James Society the other day. Best closing line ever: In the World According to Garp, we are all terminal cases.

not exactly. "garp" was co-adapted by him and a pretty good screenwriter actually, steve tesich (who wrote "breaking away"). it wasn't that it was a bad movie. it was an unnecessary one. the book is all you need.

he also did write the adaptation for "cider house" which actually was a damn good adaptation.

the worst offender was fucking "simon birch". there may have been a decent movie/mini series made from "a prayer for owen meaney" (my personal favorite from irving, and one of the most emotional experiences i ever had reading a book)...but "simon birch" was so ill conceived that conception wasn't even possible.

yeah i think "fisher king" is my favorite performance from williams. it's him at his manic yet charming best. it's actually one of my favorite gilliam films, even though he was a hired gun and not something he concocted himself.

I forget which board member always tells us people that suffer from depression should just choose to stop being depressed? Or something brilliant like that?
Robin Williams should have done that.

I'm not sure if I ever posted anything here but I used to have ignorant thoughts about depression and other mental illnesses. It's been many years ago since I held those beliefs.

No fixation. Just bringing up the point that money means comfort. And Williams still committed suicide despite having comfort in that area.

That is a crazy thought.

Funny, I can still remember the moment I finished Owen Meany 20+ years ago. I was basically empty and spent for days after. Makes me want to re-read it but I see that I lent it to someone and they never returned it. Hate that.

yeap...i have two books currently out on loan that i will probably never see again and one of them is a bit hard to find and i got it at powell's in portland so it has a bit of nostalgic value. i can try to get it back but i don't know that i will.

i don't know that i could read "prayer" again because it took so much out of me. kind of like "ordinary people" did...for some reason though i can watch that movie over and over again.
