I'll start with Terry Reid. I think some guys my age may only know him from singing at the end of the Replacement's "Someone Take The Wheel". Reid could sing anything. And he's a hell of a guitar player too. Songs don't get more beautiful than "May Fly".

there was an opener for They Might Be Giants I saw back in '97 called Lincoln that I thought were really good. lead singer had a strange voice but their music was great. to my knowledge they only have one album but i have always cherished it.

you know, technically aceyalone can count for this topic. his debut LP "all balls don't bounce" all the way back in 1995 was on capitol records (on some special new "street" division initiative) and when you get a LP/singles out on capitol records and you are of the werewithol to use massmedia distro to get THIS out there i mean say what you want about the innate futility of doing so on a pop/culture level, the dude got his message out there.

after the inevitable dropping from capital records he chilled out for a lil bit then turned around and cranked out a self-published underground classic that i'd personally call the best rap LP of all time ("a book of human language") and then faded into the kind of obscurity best reserved for when the civilized types here are having a rap thread and it's like "oh no sini has showed up to talk about that one guy he jockrides again", but hey rob dyrdek played this complete with a little "here's the name of the song graphic" on an episode of fantasy factory on MTV. and by all accounts (even if they are my own personal accounts) the dude has retained his soul and hasn't become a kickstarter-wielding yuppie like my other old rap heroes latyrx.

so in another world i think aceyalone, maybe even like my guy aphex twin, would have embraced the opportunity for limelight and become "bigger" or perhaps "more decidedly pop" musicians. and i really think they could have.... but then again there's something to be said for people who see what the upper echelons of the media combine have to offer and say "no thanks, i'll pass and do my thing." i remember once having a few drinks with a dude who worked promotions for some magazine/media-outlet @ the hotel bar he said there's a lot of rappers who he's done promo for over the years so to ask away if i wanted any stories. i immediately asked who the biggest asshole he worked with was and without hesitation he said "murs. no doubt murs, that guy knew who he was and it was an honor for you to deal with his bullshit, whether you realized it or not" so then after a chuckle (cuz who doesn't have their own murs story that this guy's story totally validates?) i'm like "what about aceyalone?" and he kinda chuckled and said "that guy doesn't give a shit. you know he's off stoned doing something he believes is artistic and he might show up, he might not.... if he does show up it's no big deal but you can tell he'd much rather be somewhere else" and i was just like mm-hmm. seemed to fit the dossier i had guessed at over the years.

back in 1997 i assumed the natural endgame for all of my favorite musicians was to become the biggest/popularist musicians in the world because they're so awesome that's just what they end up having to do. but then again thank god i was always an aphex twin fanboy and not a daft punk fanboy cuz eventually going the route of the former you realize it's all about that longevity (headrush mix).

The Giraffes

I discovered this band as an opener at another show and was completely blown away. Easily the best live band I have ever seen, and they probably would have made it bigger if they had ever cared, or didn't piss off people everywhere they went. Most of their live performances would end up with beer flying into the crowd or other ridiculous antics being done on stage.

They broke up in 2011, but I don't think they played the Chicago area since 2008 or 2009. They're re-uniting for a one-off show in Brooklyn in September that the wife and I are strongly considering going to.

The article below talks about a show I saw them at. The lead singer has this sort of "pace-maker" thing implanted because of a serious heart condition, and I guess it ended up going off during their performance. They still finished the show, but nobody would have have ever realized something was wrong.



I got to see them a few times at the Liar's Club the last couple times they rolled through town. I'm pretty certain they were the only place that would consider having them due ridiculous shit that ensued at other venues I caught them at. Herb would walk around and just pass out free PBR tall-boys at the end of the night, and the shows were just incredible.

I saw them at The Beat Kitchen once and they were pouring shots from a bottle of jack into people's mouths from the stage. The venue didn't take too kindly to that considering it was an all-ages show, and most of the people in the front were minors. Some chick also fell down the stairs going to the restroom in a drunken stupor. After the show, they nearly came to blows with the management there.

I caught them another time at The Empty Bottle, and they brought some guy on stage who proceeded to do the worm while they were playing. When he's finished, he decides to stage-dive into the crowd backwards. There was only about 50 people in the room, so he just dove backwards into the floor and landed on his back.

Fuck it. With all this nostalgia, I really should head to Brooklyn to see them in September.

on the other side of the spectrum (avoiding laptop music entirely), i remember once seeing this band cubanate have two big presumably-cuban motherfuckers in non-punk futuristic-looking leather jackets with sunglasses and guitars.... and that was it. there was no drummer, no synthesizer/person-to-play-it no nothing other than these two dudes with their guitars and a mic stand (which was prolly as useful as whatever mic captured colonel abrams on top of the pops)

evidently somewhere there was a DAT (digital audio tape) player so they presumably played a DAT with the drums/synths/vocals while these two large presumably-cuban guys in sunglasses thrashed away on the guitars. I would go on to remember their magnanimous set as "all DAT and a bag of chips"

..and then there's laptop music but don't even get me started on that. someday i hope to do a laptop set from a sarcophagus.
