He was a great actor. He was one of the few people that could do tv or movie, lead or support, and do comedy or drama. His kid movies are great. Reading some stuff now I just learned Spielberg would call him when they were filming Schindler's List. He would put him on speaker phone so he could tell jokes to the cast and crew to cheer them up. Some of his stuff he lifted but made it his own too. I laughed at him quite a bit.

Seems like he had good friends and it's always hard for family and friends that are left behind. It will be sad to see him in Night at the Museum in a couple months.

No, I'm sure it's much higher. Well-adjusted people don't go into comedy. Well, other than Dane Cook. And the business takes its toll on people. Do you also suppose that coal miners have an incidence of black lung on par with the general public?

I'm not sure if I ever posted anything here but I used to have ignorant thoughts about depression and other mental illnesses. It's been many years ago since I held those beliefs.

Pretty sure it was Mac no?

Depression is genetics from what expert say. Depression doesn't know you're gonna be a comedian when you're born.

Bad analogy with coal miners and black lung. Comedians don't breath in "Depression" for a living.

Let's research suicide rates of normal folks versus the well off.

Publicizing it when it happens does not mean it happens more often.

No, I think "breathing in depression" sounds a lot like working in comedy.

I don't dispute that the numbers will show that comedians/celbreties are the higher percentage with depression. Celebrities/comedians have time and money to get diagnosed and treated and it's made public. Many of them want it made public for sympathy so it helps their careers. Ever notice they disclose this when they are in trouble or not getting gigs? The guy working in the coal mine, with black lung does not. So he's not included in the known public statistics.

So the coal miner has black lung and depression. But he's not Robin Williams so you don't know nor do you give a shit.

Indeed.

The world is a lesser place without a guy like this.

He was truly one of a kind. A genius.

Weird, but when you see all these pictures of him, what I always thought were gentle, kind, intelligent and inspiring eyes, actually now look like sad eyes.

Wow,that's beautiful.

Listen,Sory he chose to end his life but really...NEXT!

Yeah but when Dennis Leary completely stole an act verbatim and delivery from Bill Hicks that was funny right?

http://business.time.com/2012/11/08/why-suicides-are-more-common-in-richer-neighborhoods/

That was the very first article under the search for "suicide rates by income level".

Pretty much all current research indicates that $75k is the tipping point for money making no real difference. That article indicates that making under $34k increases your suicide risk though.

It also should be pointed out that most of the professions with the highest suicide rates are high paying. There is a pretty major cost associated with those types of jobs. You deal with a lot of tough situations and the pressure can be intense. Many of those jobs also put a major strain on your family life too leading to high divorce rates and general unhappiness.

Basically, the best thing you can do is find a job that you work 40-45 hours a week at making $75k+ and then enjoy your life even if you can't afford a Mercedes and a boat.

You're not even listing good comics. You've pretty much listed every hack and added Robin Williams, Bill Cosby, and Denis Miller who are all first ballot hall of famer stand ups whether you get them or not

No one thnks Wanda Sykes is funny

If you think Bill Hicks isnt funny, you never get to have an opinion on comedy again

Time for the "Name who you like" rule.

If you want to say someone sucks, then we need to know who you like so we can get a valid baseline.

Buy a kayak.

I don't understand buying a used Mercedes. Isn't the whole point to show off? I'm not impressed by your 8 year old Mercedes. If you were rich wouldn't you sell it and buy a newer model?

Loaded question, but a fair thought.

Some generations change a lot about a car. Sometimes the newer model isn't "better" for what a driver is looking for. Case in point, current gen C class versus last gen C class. This happens with a lot of luxury brands...models always get bloated with each new generation. To some extent, this happens with most models. Look at an Altima or an A4 versus the same car 10 years ago.

Additionally, older models, especially with luxury brands, still have the standard powertrains. Many traditionalists would never drive a F/I Mercedes or BMW. You'd be hard pressed to find a current gen German car without a turbo.

Etc.

And if you want to buy a car to show you're rich, a standard BMW or Mercedes isn't going to cut it. BMW and Mercedes now have models in the $30K price point.

Congratulations?

Some people see cars as simply necessary transportation and like to spend the minimum amount possible on it. That is fine.

Those same people then spend thousands of dollars on an 80" flat panel TV that can only do 1080p. That confuses me.

Everyone has their own hobbies and interests.
