Why do people who serve in the military qualify for special perks after they get out?

They're better public servants? For whatever reason cops do expect it.

The practice of comping police officers started many many years ago at a time when cops were regarded as the pillars of the community...heroes...public servants. They weren't paid much & proprietors comped them as a goodwill gesture.
I don't blame cops for expecting freebies because it has been a widespread practice for a long long time.
If I was a proprietor you better believe that I would comp everything to cops & their families too. It is better to have cops working for you than against you.

Yeah you already said that like four times in this thread.

And cops are already paid to do their job. If they're not doing it because you don't give them free stuff, then we have big problems with our system. And we do. Cops don't work for us. They act as a revenue-generating arm of the government.

Pretty sure.

Senior citizens, military members, firemen, aldermen, neighborhood thugs/tough guys, and a many others disagree with you.

But that's a whole other conversation.

Boom! Now you partially got it! Aldermen, thugs and firemen belong in the same bucket as cops! Progress!!!!!!!!

Senior and military discounts are widely advertised so that different. But you're getting there!

Did you see the line about that being an entirely different conversation?

Um, boom?

Kirkwood, you are separate to be a part of this, and I'm nothing if not welcoming.
Can you answer this?

Uneducated guess but primarily a thank you for their service. Again uneducated guess but isn't it the opposite of being a policeman where military is paid like shit, no pension and get shit healthcare? And ya get soon good pub of course.

I may be wrong as the difference patrolling the mean streets of Arlington Heights may be totally like servicing in Iraq.

Every? No, of course not. But we are raised to admire policemen and their service. I remember as a yoot the policemen in wheeling always receiving a free coffee and donut at the white hen before I walked to school. It's some weird ass unwritten rule.

I would argue that it embolden police officers to view themselves not as public servants but as some sort of kings who rule the community. It's a bad mindset.

I think people give veterans discounts in order to generate more business and to give the appearance that they care.

+1 It's a way to get into abuses of authority over really petty issues like coffee or donuts if you get in over your head.

Exactly. its the same as Mastercard promoting the hell out of "stand up to cancer" when it's probably the same as all these other corporate type donation thingies....like the Budweiser bottle cap thing. They're going to donate a minimum amount anyways, and up to a max amount. so basically it doesn't matter. plus whatever the amount is- a few million- is like pocket change for them. Same thing with all the breast cancer shit. Just makes it appear as if they're a company that really "cares" when its just a tax write off i'm sure . now maybe the smaller mom and pop businesses truly do care about veterans or whomever they're giving discounts too, but i picture the corporate types just doing a Mr. Kruger and saying we need a cause to throw some of the companies money at

Let me know when I start to discuss posted/advertised specials and discounts. Or read better.

Also - I don't eat cole slaw. But don't tell JORR that, he's rolling.

So that means any day now we should start getting flooded with social media posts from teachers bitching about how they have to go back to work.

Oh yeah bitch? You got a summer. I got a weekend. Enjoy the break and STFU about its conclusion.

 He isn't one of those people, or at least I haven't seen him ever post something like that. Most of it is from women I'm FB friends with. A week from now it will be, 'phew this first day was rough! Since I'm home 3 hours earlier than usual, I'll have some wine!'
