You're paid to do a job, not make decisions on NFL team names.
Furthermore...pick a lane and stand by it.

Sometimes, you throw the ball too well, and it goes farther than you thought it would.

Everybody knows that Phil Simms is a great Super Bowl Champion Most Valuable Player quarterback.

He is, however, way out of line here. Can you imagine him telling Bill Parcells: "Excuse me Coach, can we please not say we are playing the Redskins this week? Can you just say Washington?" Phil McConkey and Mark Bavaro probably would have laughed him out of the team meeting.

I'm no fan of Simms but he should be commended here. Everyone should say no to using a racial slur.

If he really had stones he would resign and not do games for an organization that supports the team named he has conflict with.

commended for bandwagoning and grandstanding? if he truly had a problem with the name he would've never said it and stuck by it, not suddenly jump on the side that it's all of the sudden racist. the redskin name has been around for decades and just in the past few years people have decided it's racist. athletes usually can't think for themselves but to give anyone props for suddenly changing their mind on the name is fruitless.

I don't understand why people keep on saying this. If I used a word when I was 8 years old does that mean I have to use it my whole life?

By this same logic, gay marriage and marijuana legalization should not be getting majority support in this country.

because it's been the same word throughout its entire existence and it's always meant the same thing. throughout the civil rights movement, it's been staring everyone in the face. not to mention it's referring to one of the worst parts of US history we have, and no one has done a thing to change that.

it's completely disingenuous.

oh they've evolved. ok, so why haven't the native americans been given back some of the property we took from them? since we're suddenly so sensitive to the name "redskins"...oh i forgot. it's too late for that now because no one wants to hear that anymore. they just want an NFL team name changed. and that'll solve it all.

They get land free of taxes and taxation. They build various things (most familiarly Casinos) where they get to skirt the state laws and operate under their own terms.

What I wouldn't do to get them to name the parcel of land my house sits on as a part of one of their nations.

I don't think anyone would dispute what happened to the native Americans was horrific and yes it always was a racial slur and yes a name change won't solve all, but what's right is right. Why wouldn't you change the name at this point?

i'm not saying they shouldn't change the name. but stop acting like you're some hero for pointing it out or leading some revolution over it. if you wanted to help out native americans, there's been plenty of time to ante up.

to me, this is basically the equivalent of saying "well we won't make gay jokes or call gay people burritos anymore, but they still can't marry or adopt children or have equal rights as heterosexuals". so that's progress right? what's the difference? you're still treating them the same way you would as the name you've called them all these years.

and i'm speaking in general.

Phil Simms making a statement and our government giving back something they took are different things. I have no problem with Simms.

he's been a broadcaster for years, and he's been in the NFL for decades. all that time, the washington redskins have had the same name. now he has a problem with it, because...it's trendy. not because he has a problem with it. you can't honestly believe he is "making a statement"...unless that statement is, "i'm getting on the high horse that everybody else already has." that's the bernstein way of evolving, i guess.

I say this to myself everytime Doug Gottlieb or John Feinstein rag on the NCAA, in one of their sports minutes. Their employers are in bed with the NCAA. Don't bite the hand that feeds you.

First protest of the Washington Redskins was in 1968. This debate is not new and Phil Simms is not new at his job. While yes, people do evolve, he is clearly bandwagoning. I could care less what name the team uses, but the TV networks and the NFL are in a position to dictate if it's acceptable or not. Simms works for them and needs to STFU and do his job or find one that's less offensive to his moral compass.

Slavery existed in the United States(not counting before the Revolutionary War): 89 years.
Women couldn't vote in the United States: 144 years.
Redskins football organization exist with the name Redskins: 77 years.

So what is it that makes 77 years of existence some magic number which means that a clear wrong should not be righted?
