I think he was kidding.

I got challenged by my niece. My first inclination is to be negative. My second inclination is to ignore it because it was made on a Facebook page I never visit. Now, I figure I will probably just do it so I don't look like a dick to a young kid.

It's clear that anyone who questions the ‪#‎ALSIceBucketChallenge‬ and it's purpose is diving into a sensitive area. Let me be clear...
The social media brilliance behind this is amazing and it's evident with the 10's of millions of dollars that ALS research has raised. If you think I don't get it, I do. I've been personally affected by someone who fought the disease in my family.
It's not to say that I don't waste water either. I take showers too long (always have), I've consumed a ton of pop over the years, I take pride in a plush green lawn. I've looked in the mirror and that's part of why I've asked this question.
I lost two beautiful baby boys (Alexander and Blake) this spring, and 1 million premature babies die each year. Never would I say that 5,000 people dying from ALS is small potatoes in comparison.
All causes matter. All life matters.

Take your time. You're supposed to do it within 24 hours.

I was challenged by somebody from another sports message board ( :D ), but just took the easy way out and donated $. Now I'm being ridiculed for not recording myself dumping water over my head. I thought I was doing the right thing, but now I'm thinking there is a differing opinion on what exactly the "right thing" is...

Even if he was being serious, wasting water or food in America has very little to do with starving underdeveloped countries abroad. Even if we were able to send them all our extra food and water, it would probably lead them to produce larger populations and would do little to address any starvation problems. This will happen in any society that is "underdeveloped" until they can produce enough resources to support themselves or enough resources to trade for the resources they need.

I know it was a plea for sympathy but I'm going to give him it on losing children. I expect that would mess me up for a good long time and make me hate any causes that don't heal my pain.

Here are the details on Rodewald's kids; very sad ( from April 2014)

* * Near the start of this year, WSCR-AM/670 The Score host and IHSA reporter Matt Rodewald shared the joyous news that he and his wife Lindy were expecting twins. That joyful news turned tragic late last week, as complications arose. Only 22 weeks into the pregnancy, the twin boys were born extremely prematurely and did not survive more than two hours. The couple, who were supposed to be working on getting a nursery set up in their home, were instead forced to deal with unthinkable task of dual birth certificates, death certificates, and funeral arrangements for their babies. Sincere condolences to the Rodewalds. Keep them in your thoughts during this devastating time in their lives. .

What happened to him shouldn't happen to anyone. It's as dreadful as damn near anything you can reasonably expect to happen in life. I suspect (and hope to God) nobody here has the first inkling what that kind of hellish, tortuous misery could possibly be like.

That said ...

His original tweet is still stupid. The apparent subsequent clarification/defense of said stupid tweet vis à vis invoking one's dead kids is in a dark place somewhere between pathetic and pathological.

we should all pitch in, rent a tanker (anyone got a CDL?) and drive a load of water to CA. It should only cost about $10,000 or so.

Who's in??

I'm confused. What happened to him? Is he literally saying he had two kids die? If that's the case, I was unaware, and yes, that is horrible. I'm still not sure what it has to do with anything, though.

I hate to say this, but... I sort of agree with Ditka. I always thought they should just change the name and be done with it, but these faux vigilantes like Bernstein make me sick.

Where was Rodewald with this logic when everyone was on Tony Dungy's case?

Certain crowds want to make a crusade out of everything. Honestly, the only people who have a right to be offended in this case are American Indians, and they should be the ones putting pressure on the NFL. A bunch of white skinned liberals and politically correct do gooders are just attention whores. Our society reminds me more and more of the South Park episode where the kids are trying to do a Christmas show that won't offend anyone.

The thing is, I don't even think most people give a shit either way. But of course, Bernstein types try to make it seem as though there are all these barbaric people out there refusing to change the name because they just want to see Indians suffer. No normal person would care that much about this issue.

A lot of it has to do with social media. People have had these opinions for years but now it's so easy to connect with every other person who shares your opinion that entire movements spring up seemingly overnight. And all it takes is one legitimately righteous cause, let's say Penn State, to embiggen the smallest twitter user's sense of "justice". What do you think happened to Bernsie?
