I'm not fucking enlightened   I'm part of the problem, my negative posts are just as annoying to people as the real posts.

I never said I was better than anyone. I also didnt post myself on facebook eating the nuggets and pretending I gave a shit about someone with a disease that will likely never affect me. It's okay to admit it's attention whoring. We all do it in one way or another. I think the fact that it's disguised as charity and is becoming so widespread is what rubs me the wrong way about it.

I think the real irony here is the fact that after all this I'll probably get ALS and this donated money will have led to a cure by the time I get it.

You can say that again. I'm the unfortunate person that realizes he's a sort of a dick, feels bad about it but can't really stop himself. I wish I could either shut up or stop feeling bad about it. :?

You are way off base here, Hank. Its not just a "hip" thing to do like drinking PBR or something. People are not randomly pouring water on their heads. They do this because they are "challenged" by a friend, family member, co worker, etc. The challenge is either accepted or not.

Its a couple of bucks or literally 3 minutes out of your day. Can you honestly tell me that your kids would not get a kick out of pouring water over you because Daddy is helping a charity? Maybe one day ALS will effect your or somebody you know. I hope it doesn't, but you never know. If that ends up being the case, would you care if a DR came in and said, "well we aren't going to do anything for you except let you die because you are only one of 30,000 people who have this. My time is better served helping people who have cancer."

If a few bucks out of my pocket along with taking a few minutes to pour water on myself while videoing the thing can help somebody out who is far less fortunate than me, I cannot see that as a bad thing whatsoever.

I'm glad I don't think like you in this regard, Hankus.

You think people are pretending to care?

You think because it doesnt affect me, I dont give a shit? Then why did I donate? Because I have too much money?

And it's not disguised as charity it IS charity. Having a facebook in the first place is basic attention whoring. The only difference here is it's being used for something good.

Society is not doomed. This generation is the same as every other one. You're way too young to be the old man yelling at cloud that you are sometimes man.

Legitimate question

Does it feel good to search for and highlight the idiocy of others and/or society in general?

Do you feel like your part of it, or commenting from the outside?

Me and my son cant water the plants in my yard without one of us pouring water on the other one. I just drenched the kid yesterday with the hose after he snuck up on me and got me with the watering can. I dont need the world to see it. I also give money to church on Sunday, should I record that and dump communion wine on some dude on the street and challenge him to do the same?

Should we not care about Ebola then? Should the US do nothing to help because it only affects a few thousand people on the other side of the world?

I love finding idiocy in society. I'm certainly a part of it though. I dont know how you can't be part of it in some way or another.

No... I'm not saying you shouldnt care about ALS or Ebola or getting struck by lightning or anything that can kill you or make you sick. I'm not saying you cant donate to whatever cause you want. I'm saying there is a finite amount of resources in the world, you have to focus your resources in a manner that makes the most sense.

Yes of course! A lot of these people posting videos and donating money will forget all about ALS once the new fad comes along. I think some arent even donating any money at all.

Hank, is it then "hip" at Thanksgiving or Christmastime to donate to a food pantry? Does that mean nobody gives a shit about it in June or July? Does it mean more to donate food during the spring or summer? Does it mean less when I throw change into the Salvation Army Kettle's that are all around during the Holidays than it does when I buy something from the Thrift Store or donate money to them in the fall?

Now I will say this. There is bound to be some sort of copycat thing that ends up going viral in the coming weeks. That I am likely to have a different opinion on. Trendy or not, a bucket of water and a couple of bucks helped some people out. And I think that is pretty cool. Makes people feel like they actually can help make a difference.

Or you could just send thoughts and prayers to Lou Gherig's family.

I get what Hank is saying, but I'm not sure it matters either way.

If somebody knocks on my door taking collections for a disease/charity I've never heard of, I may throw in a few bucks.
I may forget what the charity was by the time I close the door, but I still contributed.

I agree with Hank that there a LOT of people that are in this for the social media aspect more than the charity part.
People should be able to donate without pressure to have themselves being a sheep on video.

What do you mean forget about it? What do you expect people to do? Quit their jobs and search for the cure?

If they donate money = Helps fight ALS
If they dump water on their head = helps a viral campaign that is spurring record donations to help fight ALS

There is no downside

And I dont think anyone is acting like they're special or more caring for doing it. Its a fun thing done for a good cause so people are saying "Heh...sure why not"

If you werent looking for negativity or a reason to roll your eyes at people, you might see it that way.

Now that's where I draw the line.

I'm still in Hank's corner on this. I'm not doubting that some people care, but this facebook stuff is just a "hey look at me, I care about stuff!". It's this year's version of the Kony thing, and people will just move on to the cause.

Charity is fine, I'm just more of a "Anonymous" type myself. I wouldn't care about generating 45 facebook likes on a post.

My video got 6 likes. I really didn't care how many people saw it.

How is posting a video on Facebook any different than donate to the Amvets on Memorial Day weekend and then hanging on of their fake poppie's on your rearviewmirror and driving around with it all weekend?

Image

I guess all the people that tie yellow ribbons around their trees when a neighborhood military member dies are attention whores too huh?

First of all, its waaaaaay too wide spread for anyone to think they are separating themselves as caring.

Secondly, who cares if they move on? The money was still sent.

Yeah but Frank, we've been Facebook friends for a while and I've never seen you post a video of you donating to a food pantry or dropping a buck into the Salvation Army bucket. I have seen you dump water on your head though. So yes this is absolutely the new hip thing to do. The other things are boring because you would look crazy posting a video of yourself bringing a bag of groceries into the local food pantry. Despite the fact that the food will help someone 1000X more than donating $100 to ALS research.
