You do realize that many people either don't take the poppy in the first place, or just throw them away (even though they donate)?

It's ok to donate/support without seeking attention or trying to persuade others to do it.

I donated blood last winter and wore a sticker on my shirt that said "be nice to me I gave blood" for a couple hours while I walked around the Tinley Golf Expo. What a dick I am for doing so.

In May, my wife and I went to the Sox game and she bought herself a pink Sox shirt because a portion of the proceeds went to breast cancer research. I guess she was an attention whore for wearing the shirt at the game then.

How am I missing the point? What is the difference between a facebook video, a sticker, a colored shirt, or any other items that people may wear or put on their house/car showing that they donated to whatever cause?

If you dont see a difference between wearing a pink Sox shirt vs posting a video and trying to shame your friends/family into donating to a cause then I got nothing else for you.

So many people have done it, it really doesnt qualify as attention whoring, anymore.

Ive watched maybe 10% of the videos.


Facebook and Social networking in general is attention whoring by nature. Its on there every day. So why get worked up when the attention whoring is finally doing something positive?

You said you watched my video, Hank. Who exactly did I shame? To the three people I challenged, I said that they were supposed to have 24 hours but that if they did the challenge on Wednesday or Thursday, nobody would really care.

I really put the pressure on them didn't I?

Somebody explain to the difference in attention whoring by posting a Facebook vid or wearing a colored shirt? I would really love to hear this.

This is the best question of all and the only one I dont have a great answer for. I think it's the constant stream of it and the sheer numbers. I can handle random attention whoring in small doses but this has gotten to the point where I cant ignore it.

Its all the difference between passive and in your face. Wearing a pink shirt doesnt affect anyone else but you. You are wearing a shirt. Posting a video and 'challenging' other people is going out of your way to say "I gave money! You better do it too!"

A colored shirt from a cause could be sending the exact same message.

Nobody is forced to watch these videos. So by YOU going out of your way to click on a link and watch a video, that is me being in your face? That is just not true.

Somebody just posted another one of those horrible, horrible videos of themselves pouring a bucket of ice water on their head, what a bunch of attention whores. I think I will bitch about it on all public websites.

In many peoples eyes, yes.

I've been "challenged" twice: one friend, one family member.

I donated money (once) instead of making a video. No videos for me.
Both times I was ridiculed and pressured to make the damn video. Even after showing them the receipt for my donation. So in those peoples eyes, it's clearly not about raising $ for a good cause.
It's done for the social attention. If you don't get that, there's not much else to say. You don't won't get what I'm saying.
